The YMCA Louisiana Youth and Government (Y&G) program is a statewide initiative promoting civic engagement through the YMCA's philosophy of being an organization that is continuously active in exercising social responsibility. This particular program prepares high schoolers for moral and political leadership. Through Y&G, teens learn about and experience government policies first-hand and learn how they can be changemakers to improve their communities. Plus, teens form lasting friendships, benefit from mentors, and sharpen their critical thinking, public speaking and writing skills. The mission of the YMCA Youth & Government program is two-fold: To encourage and foster leadership through service, fellowship, responsibility, and respect for oneself and others among all participants, and To educate and engage students in the process of government from local to national to international so that they become more active participants in their communities. This peer group, comprising 15 leaders from various agencies, is making waves in advancing family economic mobility and addressing critical issues affecting Mississippians. Facilitated by Alex Figueroa, Assistant Director of Learning and Development at the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA), MALN provides a crucial platform for leaders to unite, share ideas and comprehensively understand their impact on Mississippi. APHSA plays a pivotal bipartisan role, supporting leaders from human services agencies to uplift individuals, families and communities nationwide. At the core of MALN's mission is generative leadership, innovative programming, customer-centered experiences, and community-focused education. #opportunity McCain Global Leaders Program The Program supports character-driven leaders from around the world who embody Senator John McCain’s legacy of serving a cause greater than oneself. Structured as a 12-month fellowship and immersive learning experience, each cohort will include a diverse group of 25 leaders from around the world who are working “in the arena” to advance democracy, human rights, and freedom. The program is designed to advance each Leader’s personal and professional leadership journey and impact by providing training, resources, and access to highly relevant regional and global networks with the goal of preparing today’s leaders to meet tomorrow’s challenges. 2024 Global Theme: Defending Democracy In response to the growing threat that democracy, human rights, and freedom are under around the world, the 2024 McCain Global Leaders Cohort will focus on defending democracy. There are few greater challenges to the global community than the threats posed to democracy through the rise of authoritarianism, disinformation, polarization, violent extremism, and conflict. Throughout 2024, Leaders will explore the primary challenges to democracy, as well as analyze and learn about solutions related to ensuring the future stability of democracy around the world.
