Help! Calling my colleagues from the field of inclusion and advocacy. How are we dealing with problematic labelling such as ‘special educational needs’? As a disabled woman of colour I continue to be determined in unlearning the ableism I have been conditioned with throughout my life. As a professional within the disability and inclusion field I am working at ensuring my content and delivery does not perpetuate ideology that my community have highlighted as harmful. And yet….. I am really struggling to communicate without using these established terms when it comes to formal communication in bid writing for example, cooperate spaces, educational establishments, local authorities etc. Similar to the BAME label. Despite much protest and dialogue explaining how problematic the term is and it’s lack of representation, there hasn’t been an alternative provided and many organisations continue to use it. So, my question is, how do we move away from terms like ‘special educational needs’ and ‘BAME’ still ensure people know what we are talking about? Today, I was challenged to talk about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals-an incredible framework designed to make our world more just, sustainable, and equitable by 2030. These goals are interconnected, tackling critical issues and guiding us toward positive global change. 6 Of course, I'm passionate about all of them, understanding how they complement each other. But as an activist for non-visible disabilities and mental disorders, SDG 10: Reducing Inequalities is closest to my heart. In tackling SDG 10, we're not just addressing disparities on paper; we're working towards real, impactful change in the lives of those who face unseen challenges daily. Allyship Tip: Hold people accountable for the words they use and the postures they take in silence. Silence can be loud and harmful. We should not require those in marginalized communities to carry the burden of bias, exclusion, and microaggressions alone. For the past couple of years, I’ve come to the realization that the term “special”, when referring to #peoplewithdisabilities, is actually a presumably well-intentioned pivot to say “let somebody else handle supporting or caring for that person.” This is particularly true in #healthcare. #Specialneeds aren’t special.
