Using Africa’s super-election-year as a starting point, participants discussed the strength of political institutions, the preparedness of political parties to form coalitions based on joint programmes, and more, with Liisa Laakso, George M. Bob-Milliar, Babatunde Fagbayibo and Jesper Bjarnesen.

In this issue briefing, INCITEGov trustee and University of the Philippines assistant professor JC Punongbayan explains that the coalition between the Philippines’ two political clans—the Marcoses and the Dutertes—has been driven by political interests rather than ideological similarity, therefore the recent rift between the two clans was anticipated since the establishment of the Marcos administration in 2022. He notes that pro-democracy forces must unite diverse groups and leverage new media to appeal to voters and counter the incumbents, with a vision for transparent governance and social justice beyond partisan interests. Your thoughts on the South African 2024 national results. For the 1st time, the ANC failed to achieve an outright majority of 50% +1. The new kid on the block MK led by ex President Jacob Zuma did well and basically disturbed the results that people expected. What now? All parties, especially the top 4 ANC, DA, MK and EFF have to go into coalition talks to give them the majority they need. In not so many words, the DA has made it quite clear that they would not be talking to MK or EFF who do not stand for anything they believe in - basically respecting the Constitution and upholding the rule of law. Whichever coalition prevails, will have huge impact on how the markets react AND how the people of South Africa 🇿🇦 react. We can’t deny the complexity of coalition governance but the people have spoken. May cool heads prevail as the political leaders navigate this new political landscape. Many have felt disenfranchised for many years. The different parties differ on certain issues so leadership and maturity in discussions is needed. This is not the time to point fingers, have big egos but the time to compromise, show political maturity and unity.
