Every 30 seconds, someone dies from disease caused by viral hepatitis. Thankfully, we have the tools to prevent these deaths - they just need to reach the people that need them most, at the right time. This #WorldHepatitisDay, Dr Ana Paula Cavalheiro, MSF chronic and infectious diseases specialist, shares some important facts about the condition.

A new article in Emerging Infectious Diseases reports a 11.8% prevalence of Long COVID symptoms in persons infected with the Omicron BA.5 variant. This is concerning as Omicron has a typically less severe acute disease course. This may be due to its affinity for upper airway epithelial cells vs. lung cells in contrast to the Delta B. 617.2 strain. https://lnkd.in/gpD2_Di2

Physicians for Informed Consent are misleading on so many points, First, the quoted reference on CMI and avidity analyses showed minimal qualitative improvements in immune response after MMR3 receipt. it did not find compelling data to support a routine third dose of MMR vaccine outside of specific contexts, in light of 97% efficacy of the original 2 doses vaccine, the third dose may bring little value, but the issue might not be the third dose per se, but timing of such. Second, one should be aware that a second study provided contradictory data, especially in vaccinating with a third dose during an outbreak of measles, which showed the incremental effectiveness of such a third dose of MMR vaccine for mumps outbreak control (ref2), showing that Physicians for Informed Consent either cherry picks papers, misquotes them, misanalyses them, or simple don`t read them. Third by using a threshold level 4 times higher than what is accepted internationally, one that the first reference they misquoted confirms as totally wrong. The claim that half of the children have antibody titers below protective is also wrong, as Canadian data put such around 8% at best (ref2). Canadian Federal data from 2021 shows that 79 percent of children had two doses of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine by their seventh birthday, down from 83 percent in 2019 and 87 percent in 2017. That suggests close to two in 10 children hadn't yet had their full set of shots — far from Canada's target of 95 percent coverage for that age group. "Right now we're underneath the level of immunization that we need to prevent onward transmission in Canada," said pediatric infectious diseases specialist Dr. Charles Hui, who works with CHEO and the University of Ottawa. Another study on population immunity in Ontario, published in 2019, found nearly eight per cent of blood samples had antibody levels below the threshold needed to ward off a measles infection. This suggested that immunity in some age groups may be waning "despite high vaccine coverage." https://lnkd.in/gyuWyCzM https://lnkd.in/gtfe49i2 https://lnkd.in/gRagRnnz
Did you know that the #CDC conducted a 2016 study, published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases, which concludes that a 3rd dose of the #MMRvaccine is short-lived, lasting only one year. The authors state: “MMR3 [a third dose of MMR] is unlikely to solve the problem of waning immunity in the United States... We did not find compelling data to support a routine third dose of MMR vaccine. Learn more here 👉 https://lnkd.in/g2SmW-Xv

Thank you AFENET NG, indeed, the past two decades have been marked by unprecedented challenges in global health, with pandemics, antibiotic resistance, and emerging infectious diseases pushing healthcare systems to their limits. As we look to the future, the urgency of robust Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) programs cannot be overstated. The next decade will likely bring even more challenges, but with well-implemented and adaptive IPC programs, we can mitigate the impact of infectious diseases and protect public health. Investing in these programs now is not just a necessity but an imperative for the future of global health. In 2 decades! H1N1 2009, SARS CoV1 2002, MERS 2012, Ebola 2014, Zika Virus Epidemic 2015, COVID19 2019. Each was fatal! Anyone still doubts a major disease outbreak that can uppend our lives is a matter of when and not if? Prevention is better than cure.
