Meet Maryam Muhammad 👋 she's a health promotion supervisor in Kebbi, northern Nigeria. Together with her team, she leads cooking classes for communities in Kebbi to help prevent and treat moderate malnutrition. “This kind of cooking demonstration is crucial because people understand that they can prevent their children from becoming acutely malnourished rather than bringing them to a facility to treat them," Maryam said. Using ingredients that are locally available, participants at the cooking demonstrations are taught how to make Tom Brown, a special flour blend which, when mixed with water, creates a nutritious porridge. Additional ingredients can be added, based on what is available and affordable, such as milk, meat, or moringa leaves. “Prevention will always be better than cure. MSF will not remain here forever, so sustainable approaches are needed to reduce severe malnutrition. And we know that the people we train today will pass the recipe to others,” Maryam explained.

Nigerian Government’s Role in Combating Cholera Outbreaks Cholera, caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, remains a public health concern in Nigeria. As we grapple with 882 suspected cases and 16 deaths (a case-fatality ratio of 1.9%) as of June 2024, the government can take decisive actions to reduce its spread: 1:Reviving Food Agencies and Inspection: NAFDAC (National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) must be revitalized. Rigorous inspections of food materials and production processes are essential. Ensure proper verification (such as NAFDAC numbers) on food items sold in markets to guarantee quality and safety. 2:Education and Awareness: Quality over Quantity: Educate the public about the importance of safe food consumption. Community awareness campaigns should emphasize cholera’s effects, preventive measures, and available treatments. 3:Water Production Inspection: Regularly inspect water production facilities. Ensure safe water sources and proper treatment methods to prevent cholera transmission. Monitor personal household water quality. 5:Promoting Handwashing: Encourage consistent handwashing with soap and water. Reinforce this simple yet effective practice to prevent contamination. Food and nutrition remain a vital area of interest for international development as characterized by #sdg2 which underpins a global commitment to tackle undernutritiion and hunger, one shared by Catholic Relief Services (CRS). Undernutrition poses serious implications for the #health, general development, and wellbeing of people from different strata of society, but disproportionately affects lower #income households. Cognisant of this, CRS and partners, with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, are implementing the Large Scale #Food Fortification (LSFF) in West Africa project intending to build public sector capacity for effective food #fortification at scale. Highlighting the strides being made in the sector, the Regional Technical Advisor for Health and Nutrition at CRS' West Africa Regional Office, Dr. Mawuli Sablah, was on Joy News' #AMShow with the Director for Industrial Support Services at the Food and Drugs Authority,Ghana (FDA), Mr. Koffi Essel, to discuss #research into food fortification and the role of Food Fortification Alliances in West Africa. The discussion also delved into CRS' donation of some icheck measurement equipment worth about $48,000 and training support to the FDA and their partners. The training was on the back of the evidence-based approach of the first phase of the LSFF project, premised upon targeted capacity gap assessments of public sector institutions in West Africa to fulfill their governance roles in the implementation of regional #FoodFortification in West Africa effectively and sustainably.

Championing the Right to Food: A Milestone in Advocacy. In Kenya, Article 43(1)(c) of the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to adequate, quality food. However, achieving this remains a challenge as we face rising health risks linked to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) driven by poor dietary habits and inadequate food regulation. KELIN, we are proud to have played a pivotal role in the development and launch of the Stakeholder’s Report on the Right to Food, which is part of Kenya’s submission for the 4th Cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). This report underscores our ongoing commitment to advocating for food systems that prioritize public health and equity. As we continue this advocacy, our social media campaign #KulaFitiKe is actively creating awareness around the impact of unhealthy food and alcohol consumption, particularly on children. Through this campaign, we are pushing for: 📌 Mandatory front-of-pack warning labels based on evidence to inform consumers. 📌 Stricter regulations on the marketing of unhealthy food and alcohol to children. A new publication co-authored by FFI explores how fortified bouillon could help reduce micronutrient deficiencies in Senegal. By expanding their existing large-scale food fortification programs to include fortified bouillon, Senegal could reduce the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies among all households by up to 20%. Did you know that in 2020, Cameroonians consumed over 660 million liters of beer, making them the second-largest consumer of beer in Africa? However, excessive drinking can be dangerous to health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Cameroon's per capita alcohol consumption is approximately 7.5 liters per year, which is quite high and is also a risk factor associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It's important that the Implementation of the National Development Strategy 2030, which includes the security of human capital, does not encourage alcoholism. Therefore, we must all say no to alcohol and promote a healthy lifestyle.
