Today would have been my fifteenth wedding anniversary. It’s a simple few words isn’t it? ‘Would have been’, and it masks the absolute horror of the reality… but there is a lesson there, if you look for it… As Bram Stoker wrote, “We learn from failure, not from success.” It’s true. We learn to walk by falling on our face, and picking ourselves up afterwards. We learn more from our attempts and mis-steps,than from projects that run without a hitch. This is part of the joy of the Farm, and why I love to be involved with it. That we experiment. We experiment with building styles, materials and research. It’s also true in life. We experiment with clothes, destinations and new haircuts. We build; and if something falls over, we learn. It feels like a good lesson for life, not to fear failure. When my marriage came to its end, I had no idea what the future held, and yes that can be scary. But it is also wonderful, exciting… an opportunity to learn, and an opportunity to try again.
