💡In his first analysis for Europe Desk, research analyst Jacopo Ambrosetti examines how humanitarian, energy and security concerns, added to macroeconomic instability, put pressure on the EU´s Southern Neighbourhood. 🔗 Link to article: https://lnkd.in/d_dmcBQh Key takeaways: 1) The EU's Southern Neighbourhood policy is largely aimed at containing major security crises from spilling on European shores. 2) Over the past few years, the EU has bolstered its regional presence with migration accords and energy deals as part of a broader strategy to meet security objectives and establish shared interests. 3) Escalations in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and shifting regional dynamics add pressure on a worsening migration crunch, seriously testing the EU's securitarian approach in its Southern frontier. #Europe #Southern #neighbourhood #policy #Africa #Sahel #MiddleEast #migration #security

In our latest post, Yu Furukawa analyses the information campaign behind the 2015 EU "Refugee Crisis", using Senegal as a case study. Ultimately, Furukawa argues, the EU’s post-crisis migration policy has been characterised by the securitisation and externalisation of borders, reinforcing a pre-existing development agenda that primarily serves the political interests of EU states. https://lnkd.in/eMRPbSNQ

📣Dear Friends! We are happy to share the new Prague Process Policy Brief ‘Forced Migration from Ukraine: migration scenarios 2.0’ authored by Dr Franck Duvell. This Policy brief considers the displacement and forced migration inside and outside Ukraine’s international border, the dynamics of these movements, the individuals’ aspirations and the possible future developments in migration trends while reassessing scenarios developed in 2022. The analysis delves into the complexities of the displaced population's intentions, highlighting that a significant proportion, possibly up to 2.76 million individuals, may not consider returning in the foreseeable future. As of January 2024, 6.5 million Ukrainians seek shelter abroad, with 4.2 million in the EU (possibly fewer) and around 5 million remaining internally displaced, totalling 10.5 million. Within Ukraine, 17.6 million people require humanitarian assistance, even though the economy is slowly recovering. The overall situation for Ukrainians, both within and outside the country, is characterised by a protracted war and great uncertainty regarding the war’s outcome, their legal status in host countries and integration prospects. 🔗You can read and download the full Policy Brief in English at https://bit.ly/3SE0D3Z and in Russian at https://bit.ly/3SH1Bws 📘Enjoy the read! #Militarized #governance of #migration in the #Mediterranean By Muge Kinacioglu Oxford University Press on behalf of The Royal Institute of International Affairs. This article focuses on the increasing use of military actors in the governance of migration in the Mediterranean basin. The article analyses maritime migration as distinct from migration via other routes. It investigates the understudied features of the #securitization processes of maritime migration and discusses their repercussions for #migrants' rights. To this end, building on critical security perspectives and inspired by critical geopolitics, the article conducts a textual and discourse analysis of #nato and the #europeanunion’s security assessments and strategies, and examines the practices ensuing from these organizations' security narrative. The article's main arguments are two-fold: first, it contends that framing migration as a ‘hybrid threat’ by NATO and the EU expands the spaces of containment of human mobility at the expense of migrants' protection and rights; and second, it argues that such a ‘threat discourse’ simultaneously provides legitimacy for military operations and eliminates accountability for infringement of the human rights of migrants and refugees. The article ends with a summary of the analysis and the subsequent conclusions, as well as suggestions for overturning the current trends of dehumanization of migrants and law-breaking in the name of security in the Mediterranean. The bloc’s new multiyear budget — dominated by a €50 billion ($54.8 billion) aid stream for Ukraine — includes a proposal to shift up to €2.6 billion within its main development funding pot to tackling what it calls the “extraordinary geopolitical tension” from increased migration. The decision would divert funding away from major organizations in the development sector, including The Global Fund and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. #gavi #ukraine #migration #EU #geopolitics
