Industry 5.0 in Commercial Kitchens Industry 5.0 transitions from purely economic objectives to prioritizing social value and well-being. This phase of industrialization involves humans collaborating with advanced technology and AI-driven robots to enhance workplace processes. In commercial kitchens, when chefs work alongside robots, initially they may experience heightened stress due to a perceived lack of self-efficacy. This uncertainty can lead chefs to question their culinary skills. However, addressing this issue through training and considering chefs' perspectives can improve their self-efficacy. Once chefs' confidence is bolstered, integrating robots to assist with hazardous or repetitive tasks like deep-frying food could prove beneficial.

Among the recent news, the most shocking one might be that Red Lobster has filed for bankruptcy. Red Lobster is a franchise with over 600 locations in North America, with a history and scale of over 50 years. Just a few years ago, it was one of the quintessential family restaurants where the whole family would go for a delicious dinner. Although visits had gradually dwindled, the sudden bankruptcy filing must have shocked many people. What was the reason? Many media outlets point to the $20 unlimited shrimp promotion. Could it have been done just once? But as this menu became popular, they made it a permanent item. Did Red Lobster really need to fix that menu permanently? The real problem goes back to 2019. It was a year when the number of visitors and sales noticeably declined. At the same time, costs increased, specifically due to rising food costs from inflation and wage increases. While high rent and interest costs were burdensome, the actual amount itself did not increase. How could they have responded to rising food costs and wages? In 2020, Red Lobster stopped the unlimited lobster promotion and suddenly started the $20 unlimited shrimp promotion. The reason they could attempt this seemingly reckless promotion was that Red Lobster's management company, Thai Union Group PCL. had a huge shrimp factory in Thailand. They thought they could actually reduce food costs significantly. However, the problem lay elsewhere. Surprisingly, too many customers visited. They expected about a 20% increase in customers, but it increased by 40%, resulting in an $11 million loss at once. To minimize this loss, Thai Union Group PCL forced Red Lobster to cut costs, and with no experience in restaurant management, Thai Union began cutting the wages of Red Lobster employees. Eventually, the number of tables assigned per server increased from 3 to 10. Red Lobster's service became a mess. Despite this, Red Lobster had to maintain sales and customer numbers, leading to more promotions, which resulted in a decline in service quality. Eventually, unable to sustain customer numbers even with the unlimited shrimp promotion, Red Lobster made it a permanent menu item in 2023. Less than a year later, Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy. Many media outlets reported that Red Lobster went bankrupt due to losses from the wrong promotions. However, anyone who had dined at Red Lobster would have noticed that the service had been deteriorating over the past few years. Many people stopped visiting after being disappointed with the service when they went for the unlimited shrimp. Even the oldest and largest companies can file for bankruptcy when they do not properly compensate their employees.

The launch of fully robotic restaurants was inevitable. Robotic capability has been pecking at the edges of all restaurant functions for some time now. The appeal of end to end robotic function for the restaurant company was also inevitable, the reason being that human staff are just becoming increasingly harder to recruit and retain for that specific business. This means operations that can now be 24/7/365 without any need for human style rest, without staff relations issues. The elimination of humans in standard office type roles is next. It's not maybe. It's definite.

𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐈 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 🍔 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚 🇺🇸 - 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐬 🤖 🍴 Pasadena's CaliExpress is flipping the script on traditional fast food restaurants 🍝. Gone are the days of bustling kitchens filled with human chefs 👨🍳. Instead, #Flippy, a fry-making robot 🦾, and his tireless grill-master companion churn out burgers and fries with robotic precision 👌 . This futuristic approach not only addresses staffing shortages but also offers consistent food quality ✔ , thanks to their unwavering accuracy. ⁉ Nevertheless, the rise of robot chefs raises questions about the human element. With fewer employees needed, job displacement becomes a concern. While CaliExpress maintains some staff for final touches and #technology upkeep, the overall workforce shrinks significantly ⤵ . This shift aligns with California's rising minimum wage 💲 for fast food workers, offering restaurants like CaliExpress a financial advantage. 🤔 While studies suggest #AI may not be economically viable for many jobs, #automation's potential in the restaurant industry, plagued by understaffing, is undeniable. The fast food chain stands as a pioneering example, showcasing the benefits and challenges of robotic chefs 🍴. Whether this is a glimpse into the future or a temporary experiment remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: the kitchen is no longer just for humans 😶 .

Stop pretending you want to save on labor cost 🙄 You REALLY don't.... You want to know what really breaks my heart? When I see an Industry that is so desperately in need of labor innovation reject it based on unfounded fears. There are a lot of Restaurant Owners who are really struggling with labor who won't even look in the direction of a robot automation as an option! YOUR rejection is not because you have done your due diligence in researching the cost benefit (btw - It only costs $1.73 hr to hire a Food Running Robot) YOUR rejection is not because you have spoken to other operators who are currently using the labor saving technology and thriving from its labor cost impact. YOUR rejection is not even because you have used it and it just didn't work for you. Your rejection is from the scary boogie man imaginary robot scenarios you have dreamed up in your head! You are hesitant because of FEAR: False. Evidence. Appearing. Real. Fear can take our mind to some fantastical places that will keep us paralyzed from making life changing decisions that would improve our future drastically. I have seen time after time how robots have been able to breathe new life into a Restaurant on Life Support!!! If you are operating in FEAR please, I beg you. STOP. Get educated for real! Don't let your imaginary mind make up ridiculous robot scenarios that will keep you stuck in the same high labor cost reality that you are facing in the REAL world... DM me so we can set up some time to chat! Or use my link to schedule a free consultation. 😁 https://lnkd.in/gdv5fxih Let's get you educated my dear friend! Hospitality jobs are no longer appealing to some Americans.... Here's how robot automation can help .... 1. Initial Investment: The upfront cost of purchasing and implementing a robot food runner can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands, depending on the sophistication of the robot and its capabilities. The one's that I offer can be leased for as low as $1.73 an hour. 2. Operating Costs: Robots typically have lower operating costs compared to human staff. They don't require wages, benefits, or breaks. 3. Labor Hours Saved: A robot food runner can work continuously without breaks or shifts. While it will not completely replace human staff, it can assist in repetitive tasks, reducing the need for additional human labor during peak hours. 4.Increased Efficiency: Robots can enhance the efficiency of certain tasks, such as delivering orders or clearing tables. This efficiency can lead to faster turnover of tables, allowing restaurants to serve more customers in the same amount of time. 5. Scalability: Robots can be deployed in various locations and scaled based on demand. This scalability allows for flexibility in adjusting the number of robot food runners to match the restaurant's needs. 6. Adaptation to Peak Hours: During peak hours, when human staff may be stretched thin, robot waiters can provide additional support, ensuring timely service without the need for overtime pay. It's essential to note that while robot food runners can contribute to labor cost savings in certain aspects, they will not entirely replace the need for human staff, especially in roles that require interpersonal skills, complex decision-making, and nuanced customer interactions.
