”If you walk in the footprints of others, you won’t make any of your own.” -Unknown To lead or to follow.... To be original or a copy cat... To invent or to recycle... As we navigate this journey in life, we have made these choices, intentionally or unintentionally.... I’ve learned 5 main things over the last three years about my journey in life. Not what your journey should be but what my journey is and I want it to continue to be. #1 Be intentional. Life can happen to you or you can happen to life. While I can’t control everything that happens, I can be intentional about it and respond versus react. #2 Don’t be afraid to jump. Take a chance. If you don’t succeed, try again. It’s not failure. It’s a learning experience. Thomas Edison tried 1,000 times before he invented the lightbulb. Persevere. Always. It does pay off. #3 Don’t follow the crowd. While it is tempting and sometimes that is where the fun is, the crowd equals mediocrity. It’s easy to follow the crowd, but much harder to charter new territory. Go for the new territory! Oh the things you will discover! #4 Love deeply. Throw inhibition to the wind and just love. All people. All races. All nationalities. When we open ourselves to love, it produces authenticity and transparency. Yes you will get hurt, but the pain brings growth, healing and newness of life. #5 Give. Constantly. Look for opportunities. They stare you in the face daily if you but look for them. I’m reminded of a scripture in the Holy Bible that says this. I like the message version: “Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults—unless, of course, you want the same treatment. Don’t condemn those who are down; that hardness can boomerang. Be easy on people; you’ll find life a lot easier. Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Leading with Authenticity: The Power of Embodying Our Roles How can we truly stand up for ourselves while honoring the various roles we embody - as partners, parents, siblings, friends, and perhaps even mentors in this world? This profound consideration has been on my mind a lot lately. It's about how we can do justice to others while being mindful of ourselves. In other words, how can we not only experience our humanity within ourselves but actively live it in our actions, thoughts, and interactions? By setting a good example, we set a new standard. Through our lives, we can lead others to a deeper, more authentic expression of being human. Because what we exemplify comes back to us. This starts with leading ourselves first. Each person carries unique strength and gifts that the world needs now more than ever. Your gifts can be gentle or fierce, quiet or loud, constant or ever-changing. The key is to embrace them, regardless of the inner voices or outer influences that try to dissuade us. Allow yourself to shine. Become your own advocate, your source of validation.
