The Ultimate SHANK Fix! If you're struggling with the shanks it means you're either standing too close to the golf ball or the most common one being the club or travelling further away in fact too far away from the body. If the club moves further away from you you’ll promote this side of the golf club with the extreme being a hostel. But we could fix this part by placing a box on the other side of the golf ball with the aim to avoid the box and this will help some of you, but if your clubface is returning to the ball like this with the heel side of the club leading the race, this can also encourage the shanks. So there’s 2 things I want you to check. 1, at the top of your swing if your wrist position is cupped like this, it opens the face and causes the shanks, so i want you to feel like your right palm, your trail palm is going to point to the sky at the top of your swing. 2, are you trying really hard to get this forward shaft lean? Well, this is a promoter of an open face and therefore can encourage those shanks too, so if you're going to do this one, you should be starting with the face slightly closed so when you swing to impact, it’s not going to go back to square. Hit Your Driver So Much Further! The two main aspects you want to change to hit the golf ball further is the angle of attack and the strike. It’s all good adding more speed, but without the right angle of attack we’ll lose control and distance but without the strike, the consistency will go with it. So take a small golf box and place it at least 5 inches away from the golf ball. If you're someone stuffing with an attack angle that's too low in the minus, like an iron, then your aim is to avoid the box. But some of you may have the attack angle way too high, then your aim is to feel like you're going to hit the box, push your hands before impact oto the box rather than dragging the club down to hit the box. As you bring the club to the top, move your weight towards your right heel (for RH golfers) while keeping your sternum centered over the ball. Do you want to understand the fundamental mechanics of a golf swing? Every movement of your head affects the radius of your swing from your shoulder to the clubhead, which ultimately impacts how the clubhead connects with the ball. To maintain a steady radius, keep your head in a fixed starting position. Any dips or movements will negatively affect your left arm’s radius, causing it to reach the impact zone differently from how it started Lastly, your head movements will also affect your weight distribution which needs to stay centered then can move towards the target after impact. Mastering your swing path is key for consistent shots. Pros keep it subtle, just a bit around their target. For us, two tricky spots: the over-the-top move (swinging too far left for righties) and getting "stuck" with arms lagging, causing blocks and hooks. Justin Thomas suggested, in a recent post, using golf swing obstacles - like a bucket of balls for a left swing or a stick to prevent overcompensation. Golfers Digest recommended sliding a towel outside your club's toe to fix the over-the-top move. For the inside-out move, use an obstacle (like an alignment stick) behind the ball.
