It's not about quotas or political rhetoric. It's talent management and recruitment. As a product of HBCUs ( University of the District of Columbia & Detachment 130 Air Force ROTC via Howard University) I know the talents these institutions produce. We must reach back and ensure we mentor, develop and recruit those needed to keep the defense of this American Experiment strong. "They (HBCUs) represent only 3 percent of U.S. colleges and universities in the United States, but they graduate 25 percent of Black students with bachelor’s degrees in STEM fields and produce almost 30 percent of Black graduates of science and engineering PhD programs." https://lnkd.in/dsTqNshF

Some of you have already noticed that I recently changed my bio on LinkedIn to include "Historical Figure." A large part of that was inspired from this powerful talk that I went to at #NSBE50. The incredible Korie Grayson, PhD gave a talk about mastering the art of self-promotion. Like many early-career professionals, I struggle with self-promotion. I do not want to appear as if I am "bragging" about myself. But I learned from this talk that it is important to showcase not only your talents, skills, and experiences but also showcase those distinguishing features that make you unique! I am the first Black woman to get a PhD in Robotics at the University of Michigan, but wasn't sure how/when/where to broadcast that fact. From this workshop I realized that I want to showcase the parts of myself that I am proudest of--so now you can see "Historical Figure" in my bio! What are some features that make you stand out? Are they in your bio? Let's strive to promote ourselves better!

I am deeply honored by this unexpected recognition during Black History Month. I am reminded of many mentoring conversations with summer interns. Our interns, coming from predominantly African-American communities to work in the Pacific Northwest, faced a stark demographic contrast. I would reassure them, 'All we require of you is to stay and to make it through your internship.' My consistent message was 'being yourself and making your unique contribution is why you were hired.' It was always a relief for my mentees to find out our expectations were 'so simple.' I would also remind our interns that each of them was amazing, that the hiring process was competitive (it was!), and making it through meant they were more than enough. It meant that we saw their potential to fulfill all that we required of them, including staying, representing, and making it through to the end. As I currently embark on Act 2 of my career, having opened a consulting organization, I look forward to collaborating with more industry leaders to foster innovation and growth. This recognition by Women in Electronics for my contributions in engineering, business transformation, and cultivating a respectful workplace in our industry is not just a personal honor. It is a reflection of the collective spirit of resilience, courage, and groundbreaking achievements that define Black history. When it comes to careers, students tend to limit their opportunities based on historically-derived gender stereotypes. YouScience CEO, Edson Barton and I had a chance to talk with the local NPR affiliate this week about the importance of the 2024 Black Youth in STEM report, and how it can be a conversation changer from speaking about STEM interest to STEM aptitude which then shifts the focus and ownership to us, the adults, to close the exposure gap and introduce STEM careers to Black youth where they are naturally suited to thrive. Take action and use aptitude assesments to help students see beyond the bias. Engage Black youth with intentional career pathways to widen perception and build occupational awareness. Build equity and remove systemic barriers to allow for the persistence of Black youth in their STEM educational pursuits.
