Today it's my turn to feel the weightlessness of a redundancy after almost six years at Microsoft. It hurts, but I'm also excited about the possibilities that this (hopefully) opens up. Everyone's talking about AI, but not everyone's had a chance to immerse themselves in it. For the past three years I've worked on content moderation problems with data science and engineering teams, making sure our algorithms and GPT prompts are safe, fair and effective. I'll be looking for ways use my hard-won knowledge here in Australia. My immediate focus is completing my research at UTS (on misinformation, AI and journalism), but I have lots of time now, so don't be shy about getting in touch. I'm particularly interested in Responsible AI. Thanks to everyone who I've worked with at Microsoft during this period of rapid change. I've learned more in the last six years than at any other time in my career, and while I know it's a corny thing to say, I am truly grateful for the opportunities I've had. Day 69: Question: Permutation || Given a collection of numbers, nums, that might contain duplicates, return all possible unique permutations in any order.   Example 1: Input: nums = [1,1,2] Output: [[1,1,2],  [1,2,1],  [2,1,1]] Example 2: Input: nums = [1,2,3] Output: [[1,2,3],[1,3,2],[2,1,3],[2,3,1],[3,1,2],[3,2,1]] Answer Approach: For solving this question, (Using backtracking) Firstly sorting the input array to ensure that duplicate elements are adjacent, then implementing a backtracking algorithm to recursively generate all permutations while skipping duplicate elements by checking if the current element is the same as the previous one and if the previous element has not been used before, and finally storing each complete permutation in a result list and returning the list once all permutations have been generated. Working at Microsoft for this long, I’ve noticed that we have many trivial recurring issues like version upgrades, compatibility, migration and more. 🤔 One thing that has irritated me a lot is the "graveyard" we have. Microsoft has killed a lot of products simply because, after building them, we realized that they were already being built by another team. 🚫🛠️ I talked with a friend who works at Amazon and got good insights on how engineers' productivity can be improved. Most of their development practices are centralized like using the latest version of libraries and frameworks when starting a new product. 🔄 They believe in moving fast, so there are times when a POC (Proof of Concept) is deployed in production, which was never the case at Microsoft. 🚀💡 And many more such standardized practices that I feel Microsoft could adopt. Satya Nadella, this is not me complaining about Microsoft. 🔺 Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, shared that over 25% of new code at the company is now generated by AI. This means that AI is helping Google’s developers by doing a chunk of the initial coding work, which is then checked and approved by human engineers to ensure it meets quality standards. This approach helps Google work more efficiently. "This helps our engineers do more and move faster... I am energised by our progress, and the opportunities ahead. And we continue to be laser focused on building great products." said Pichai during the firm's Q3 earnings conference call. Yet again, NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang's words come to mind: "....It is our job to create computing technology such that nobody has to program, and that the programming language is human.......Everybody in the world is now a programmer.
