Today marks the end of an era as I bid farewell to AWS after an unforgettable 4 years & 8 months journey! 🌐💙 I've worn multiple hats, shuffled through 4 roles, danced through 3 teams and 2 orgs – a journey that can only be described as a rollercoaster of growth, learning, endless AWS acronyms and incredible people. 🎢💻 It's been an absolute privilege to work alongside some of the most brilliant minds that turned each day to a masterclass in innovation, resilience, and the power of teamwork. 🚀 To my incredible colleagues at AWS: you're not just coworkers; you're a powerhouse of talent, and I've been fortunate to learn and grow with you. Thank you for being my mentors, my collaborators, and my partners in crime. As I step into the next adventure, I leave with a heart full of memories and a brain full of knowledge. As the newly appointed CEO of AWS, Matt Garman steps into his role with a wealth of experience and a vision for the future. With his leadership, there's a sense of anticipation in the air, a feeling that change is on the horizon, bringing with it both challenges and opportunities. One area where we might see shifts is in the focus on new markets. Matt's strategic mindset and growth focus could lead to prioritising expanding AWS's reach into untapped territories or emerging industry segments. This could mean increased marketing efforts, targeted product development initiatives, or even strategic acquisitions to bolster AWS's presence in key sectors. That approach can be balanced with his product quality excellence, which could translate into focusing on growing the current market through innovative and improved services.  Moreover, Matt's reputation for fostering collaboration and teamwork could herald a new era of synergy within AWS. Breaking down silos and encouraging cross-functional innovation could become the norm, driving us to new heights of creativity and efficiency. Matt has already announced that he will make some organisational adjustments. Will it be with this intention? Efficiency, too, might become a hallmark of Matt's leadership. While AWS is already renowned for its operational excellence, Matt's keen eye for optimisation could further streamline internal processes and resource allocation, ensuring that AWS continuously operates at peak performance. Under Matt's guidance, we may see an evolution in service offerings. With his finger on the pulse of emerging technologies, Garman could steer AWS towards new frontiers such as edge computing, quantum computing, or AI-powered solutions, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of innovation. Also, let's remember the importance of clear communication. Matt's emphasis on transparency and openness could lead to a new era of customer engagement, with more transparent communication around product roadmaps and development plans fostering more robust relationships with valued customers and partners. But among all these changes, some things will likely remain the same. AWS's unwavering commitment to customer centricity, for instance, is a cornerstone of AWS's success and is unlikely to waver under Garman's leadership. Similarly, dedication to continuous innovation and a long-term vision for sustainable growth are values that will endure, driving us forward into the future. Of course, there are uncertainties, too. Matt has not yet revealed the specifics of his growth strategies, and we are yet to see the impact of his leadership style on existing teams within AWS. This one initially caught me by surprise as it seemed he was just getting started. But as it turned out, Selipsky viewed his role as strictly transitional, for preparing the next generation of AWS leaders. Nonetheless, the lens to view this is that, while the carbon-sucking demands of #genAI threaten to upend the industry, AWS business is showing early signs of plateauing. It's no longer the days of (to paraphrase) you don't get fired for buying AWS. We don't think this means "Day 2" in Amazon parlance, but as we recently noted, AWS needs to realize it is a new day. It's graduated the hypergrowth startup phase and now it needs to overcome its product silos. AWS's huge all you can eat menu of cloud services has to get rationalized, bundled, and simplified if it's going to grab a bigger chunk of IT. Because, despite the hype, at most organizations computing is still majority on-premises, and getting that last mile is always going to be the hardest. That will be Matt Garman's challenge.

It has been an exciting couple of weeks for Amazon Web Services (AWS) as they transition to their third CEO, with Matt Garman taking the reins. This is a great move, building on the challenging work that Adam Selipsky did during the pandemic to right-size some of the organizations and focus on margins and the core. In fact, the service margin story will probably become a Harvard case study, bringing back the money that supports not only AWS innovation but also Amazon stock. Matt has some work to do, and he is well suited. Solving some #GTM motions, especially with partners, reigniting the innovation engine and the focus on the peculiar culture. As Matt said below and sent to customers, getting AWS back to a "place where smart risk-taking, customer obsession, and a never-ending drive to innovate are embraced and celebrated." Also, like the comment John Furrier said, "AWS has always been about taking care of the heavy lifting and standing up infrastructure easily. Now it's time for that "born in the cloud" experience for the AI revolution. Specifically for this next generation of developers building AI companies and apps."
