My deepest thanks to all who have recognized the LAA’s award and especially to those who have taken the time to reach out with comments and messages. There are so many people who contribute so much more of their time and thoughts every day – which includes a number of the folks who made the time to comment or react to this post – and who have many more demands on their time, that I feel like a bit of an imposter. The Law School was a formative experience for all of us, and I was fortunate to have people invest in my success while I was there. It would be ungrateful of me not to find ways to be there for those coming after me. Our boards are one way to help but those of you who extend a hand, year after year, to students finding their own paths, are the real Outstanding Volunteers. Whether as speakers, Esq. participants, guest lecturers, Winter Session instructors, recruiters, local alumni connections and sponsors, readers for our faculty, hosts of Duke events, or doing special projects for the Law School, you all are finding ways to give back. And you know how rewarding it is to be a member of the Duke Law Family. There are many, many organizations and causes that pull on our sleeves and ask us for our time (and occasionally for our money). The fact that you choose Duke as the beneficiary of your service makes your time and effort really special. This is a recognition of all of you for what you do. I just happen to be the choice this year – all of you deserve and will receive your recognitions as well. So please let me thank all of you for the reactions, the encouraging words, and especially for continuing to be members of the Family. Michael
