Walking the gemba, is a term which means real place, it implies being where the people are. In essence it refers to senior leadership entering the world of the everyday common line leader and observing how work is being performed. It is an act of extreme value, which gives insight and perspective Into day-to-day process operations and how they are run at each location. The operation and production benefits obtained during such walks yield exponential relational capital and process insight. The act of walking the floor and relating to people while learning their processes helps develop compassion which drives process optimization. Because the collaboration between both perspectives complements one another. In a like manner, the article featured this month by Going Back to Give Back, “ Echoes of Equality,” captures the spirit of compassion exemplified in the gemba walk. The writer of the article invites the reader into the world of the formerly incarcerated and their journey back into society. The perspective and insight provided in this article is a call to action echoing from a canyon of despair. I invite you to come along with me and walk the gemba of returning citizens with the intention of optimizing the process of re-entry for the good of the individual and the society at large.

My friend Karina Mora-Metts and I did a live conversation on Monday about the *real* story behind Cinco De Mayo. Since then, I've been thinking about how the #1 reason this holiday is so prolific in the United States can be attributed to the fact that in the 80s, beer & alcohol companies decided to make it so. They extracted what they wanted from Mexican culture and have made the 5th of May the biggest grossing day for alcohol in the first half of the year (close to March 17). This cultural extraction is cultural appropriation for financial gain, & what we will see next month, with those same beer companies (and every company!) rainbow-ifying everything for Pride Month, decontextualizing the celebration from the LGBTQIA+ experience & their struggle for human and legal rights that burst out of Stonewall in June, paving the way for Pride in the first place. If you aren't interrogating over-policing & police brutality, you're missing a core component of Pride & should rethink your choice to engage in the celebrations. Similarly, if you aren't interrogating the impact of colonization on people across the Americas, and how we in the US love Mexican "things" but watch media, policies, and Presidents discard and denigrate Mexican people, you might want to reconsider your Cinco de Mayo celebrations, too. This is such a shame and a perfect example how people with privilege use it the wrong way. People are completely oblivious as to what privilege means and they take it as an offence - like some cis people taking offence in being called 'cis' and think it's a slur. 😕 Everyone has a foot in the privilege bucket and to truly understand how it skews our experience, we need to look at DEI with intersectional glasses. We can't isolate people based on one characteristic, because some of our characteristics bring privilege and some can bring discrimination to the same person. Acknowledging where we have privilege is a necessary part of growth and we should use our privilege areas to support other people, not to silence and marginalize them further.
