From the onset Slaughter was forced to use hyperbole to address the hype and pressure he had to do a video on the city of Montreal, but reserved the second half of the video to say it straight and point to “opportunities for improvement”. The Asterix in the title is indicative of this. He says the Best* city in North America is …”more like five good neighborhoods in trench-coats pretending to be a great city.” Some of these major opportunities for improvement he infers about are: reversing the severing of neighborhoods by highways and multilane arteries, improving the intra and inter modal connectivity, extending pedestrianization or bike infrastructure initiatives from pockets of initiatives to structurally connect them to the larger network. Other implicit opportunities for improvement are: the transit ticketing system and the pedestrian way-finding experience, an over reliance on bike and car sharing programs to fill the gap left by the disappeared tramway, an overrated underground shopping network robbing the city of potential ground level vibrancy, and the rampant use of temporary infrastructure for urbanization projects. Although true, I must say, temporary infrastructure plants the seed toward the permanent. There was a brief remark regarding Westmount at 33:45 applauding some bike links. Overall, it seems that the hype was just a little too high so Slaughter felt obliged to tone it down, but he does go on to say: “But I have to admit, it’s [Montreal] improving better and faster than any Canadian city…”. I guess it shows that Montreal is on the right path, but there’s still many opportunities for improvement. This is the first map I've seen that really puts the United States Pacific territories & minor outlying Islands in geographic perspective. Honolulu is 2,393 miles southwest of San Francisco. It is more than a 5-hour flight from here to the west coast of the U.S. mainland. It is 2,594 miles from here to American Samoa south of the Equator. Guam is 3,799 miles Southwest of Hawaii. It is a 20-hour time difference from Hawaii to Guam because it's on the other side of the International Date Line.
