A paper published in the open access journal Sustainability MDPI analyses the water footprint required for the production of avocado fruit in Mexico. The article, cited in The Conversation, states that the avocado fruit crop requires a significant amount of water for sufficient growth. The study found that avocado production in some years used the total amount of water dedicated to agriculture in Mexico. Production was also up to 120% over the volume of water that was granted to the agriculture municipality. These findings are important for the development of more sustainable agricultural practices for avocado production which currently does not align with UN sustainable goal 6 for the mitigation of water scarcity. Sustainability is one of the most important and pertinent topics talked about in the coffee industry today – especially when it comes to trade and production. Carbon neutral, regenerative agriculture, and organic coffee farming are just a few examples of how producers are improving their farming practices. What can often be overlooked, however, is that regenerative agriculture and organic farming date back thousands of years – rooted in indigenous and native coffee-growing and farming communities around the world. Guided by principles of working in harmony with nature, this in-depth knowledge of sustainable coffee production has been passed down to successive generations. Preserving and maintaining these time-honoured traditions and farming practices is the collective responsibility of many coffee-growing families today, and continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable coffee production. At the same time, however, it’s also important to differentiate between these key sustainability terms so we can understand them better – especially organic and regenerative farming. In today’s article, Zoe Stanley-Foreman speaks to Victoria Nacif Dutra, customer service manager at Fazendas Dutra | Specialty & Organic Coffee, and Cobi Cruz, CEO of Organis, to learn more about how succession and heritage are crucial to regenerative coffee farming. #PerfectDailyGrind #CoffeeFarming #SustainableCoffee https://lnkd.in/eCkjA_9f

Nice article considering emerging movements, practices and #standards advancing #Regenerative #Agriculture that I am finding useful as I incubate a marketing platform to scale Regenerative #Mezcal . We are considering establishing a "certification or seal" and brand alliance to accelerate regeneration with agave. Did you know that Mezcal or agave spirits are quickly becoming the world's top distilled spirits? Compared to other distilled spirits, mezcal can be #climateneutral , #naturepositive , and good for you when used responsibly! Regeneration offers a pathway for smallholder farmers to stay on the land growing their heritage craft in contrast to the tequila industry that displaced agave farmers when global corporations transformed a heritage craft into industrialized food, further exacerbating our climate crisis and wealth inequality. Ingénieur agronome spécialisé en production végétale, l'élevage de tilapia rouge et, la culture hors-sol
This study addresses the challenge of sustainable food production by using recycled waste to create fish feed that promotes plant growth in a cost-effective system, tackling both water scarcity and food sustainability. Conducted over 28 days in a glasshouse at the Higher School of Agronomy in Mostaganem, the study successfully met its objectives. It focused on assessing the effectiveness of fish feed made from recycled household and industrial waste, specifically on the growth of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and its impact on lettuce cultivation (Lactuca sativa) in a combined aquaponic system. The results are promising, showing exceptional vegetative growth in lettuce, with an average weight of 138.18 ± 21.79 grams in just 4 weeks, and a significant increase in fish weight, with a specific growth rate of 1.58% per day. These findings demonstrate that the feed effectively meets the nutritional needs of the fish while promoting optimal lettuce growth in a balanced environment in terms of pH, temperature, and conductivity.

●Regenerative agriculture is gathering speed in the coffee sector ●However, only 19% of people surveyed know about it — compared to 59% who know the organic label. ●Regenerative agriculture is more of a holistic approach than a certification. However, as a previous article on Coffee Intelligence says: "Coffee farmers struggle as roasters chase quality & innovation at the expense of commitment" (with the people and the planet).
Regenerative #agriculture is trending in the #coffee sector, increasingly being promoted by big agri-food firms, as well as niche actors. More of a holistic approach than a #certification, it is a convenient catch-all term that can mean everything and nothing. Michaela Tomchek speaks with Luisa F. Mejia (Cafe del Cielo) about what regenerative agriculture really means for farmers and coffee, and how it’s difficult to concretely monitor and evaluate. https://lnkd.in/dv-Z4gpb

"The Power of Organic Farming: Boosting Sustainability and Yields" As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and food security, organic farming has emerged as a beacon of hope. By adopting organic practices, farmers can not only reduce their environmental footprint but also improve crop yields and profitability. _Benefits of Organic Farming:_ 1. _Soil Conservation:_ Organic farming methods like crop rotation and composting enhance soil health, reducing erosion and increasing fertility. Healthy soils also sequester carbon, mitigating climate change. 2. _Water Efficiency:_ Organic farms tend to use water more efficiently, reducing waste and conserving this precious resource. This is especially crucial in water-scarce regions. 3. _Biodiversity:_ Organic farming promotes biodiversity by using diverse crop rotations, maintaining ecological balance, and supporting pollinators. This ensures a resilient ecosystem. 4. _Improved Yields:_ Organic farming methods like permaculture and regenerative agriculture have shown significant increases in crop yields. This is achieved through enhanced soil health and efficient water use. 5. _Enhanced Nutrition:_ Organic produce is rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and flavor, providing consumers with healthier choices. Organic farming also reduces the use of harmful chemicals. 6. _Supports Local Economies:_ Organic farming often involves local markets, supporting community development and economic growth. This fosters a sense of community and cooperation. 7. _Climate Change Mitigation:_ Organic farming practices like agroforestry and cover cropping help sequester carbon, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 8. _Increased Profitability:_ Organic farming can command higher prices due to the premium on organic produce, increasing farmers' profitability. _Join the Movement:_ As professionals in the agriculture industry, let's embrace organic farming practices that prioritize sustainability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. Together, we can create a food system that benefits both people and the planet. _#OrganicFarming #Sustainability #AgriBusiness #FoodSecurity #EnvironmentalStewardship #ClimateAction #HealthyFood #LocalEconomies_
