Happy International Women In Engineering Day! #INWED24 The day was launched for the first time only ten years ago by the Women's Engineering Society to celebrate its 95th Anniversary. Despite the progress being made, in 2022, only 16.5% of engineers in the UK were female. As Chair of Bath’s Women’s Engineering Society I would like to encourage you to follow @wesbath on Instagram to see our posts on influential and uncredited women in engineering, as well as our post from our committee members highlighting why we chose engineering (I have added mine to this post) 💜 #EnhancedByEngineering Facts from EngineeringUK’s “From A levels to engineering” report, published in February 2023: Only 18% of first year undergraduates in engineering and technology are women. When 57% of first year undergraduates in all subjects are women. Only 22% of all first year undergraduates studied A levels in Maths and Physics. I found this report very interesting and recommend you to give it a read by following this link: https://lnkd.in/eKQnq9tV

The ETH Student Project House House is looking for more women! They offer a pressure-free environment for all students and doctoral students to try things out. So far, however, more men than women have taken up these opportunities. D-MAVT supports the initiative of the SPH. The article and the videos are the result of our fruitful collaboration. Thanks to SPH for the cool video portraits. In the videos, Stefania Bottoni, Yifan Cui and Sophia Heinrich from D-MAVT explain how they are already using the SPH. Get inspired and read more about the initiative in our article! https://lnkd.in/efS-5_4J

#INWED2024: Celebrating the Remarkable Women Engineers Enhancing Our Future Beyond the better-known stories of pioneering women engineers like NASA’s Katherine Johnson, as portrayed in "Hidden Figures", countless others have, and continue to, break barriers with their brilliance. Their perseverance, dedication and technical talents drive advancements that shape our world today. This year’s theme for International Women in Engineering Day (June 23), "Enhanced by Engineering," perfectly captures their impact. At RME, we are incredibly grateful for the contributions of our women engineers. From crafting innovative mechanical solutions to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of electrical systems, their expertise is woven into the fabric of the RME Mill Relining System. But their impact goes beyond the making of the machines themselves. Our women Applications Engineers are also problem-solvers, uncovering ways to improve safety and production efficiency for Customers. Their work has a ripple effect, facilitating the production of essential metals like copper and gold that are crucial for enabling the transition to net zero. We like to tell this important story because the wider workforce statistics remain challenging. In Australia, for example, Engineers Australia (EA) states that only 13% of qualified engineers are female, with an even smaller portion actively working in the field. In their 2022 study, the main reason cited by women who did not pursue engineering was a lack of familiarity and awareness of what engineering involves. We know we have a responsibility to change this narrative. That's why, for #INWED24, in addition to paying tribute to RME’s women engineers, we're also grateful for the opportunity to support student associations like the UniSQ Toowoomba Engineering Club and their efforts to inspire the next generation of engineers. Thank you to you all for the important work you do! https://lnkd.in/eZ9yqDTC #INWED #WeAreRME #InternationalWomenInEngineeringDay #EnhancedbyEngineering #WomeninSTEM #WomenInMining

An excellent piece on the need, importance and value of humanizing engineering, but this could and should be extended to other disciplines and professions.
“We need to focus on why we build, not just what we build.” Mary Wells, Dean of the University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering and her daughter Patricia Owen reflect on National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and the need to attract and keep women in the engineering profession in this Toronto Star Op-ed. #UWaterlooNews

We must humanize engineering and create a more inclusive profession. Thirty-four years ago, 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Twelve of them were engineering students. Mary Wells, dean of University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering and former dean of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan Suzanne Kresta share their concerns for the future of their profession in the Toronto Star today. Together with their daughters, they reflect on the great need for more women in engineering, and the necessity for inclusion. It’s a topic with particular importance in academic institutions, which build foundational values among future talent. However, the effects are felt throughout our daily lives: in the technology we use, the safety of our infrastructure, the way we connect with each other, and so much more. https://lnkd.in/gsnKCm8b University of Waterloo Alumni University of Waterloo
Today marks the 34th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, a tragic event that forever impacted the engineering profession. As a recent graduate from McGill University at the time, I vividly remember the day 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique de Montréal, 12 of whom were engineering students. This event brought to light the reality of being a woman in a male-dominated field with few female role models. However, it also highlighted the responsibility we have to encourage and support women in engineering. My colleague Suzanne Kresta and our daughters Patricia Owen and Rebecca Kresta collaborated on an op-ed discussing the urgent need to humanize engineering and create a more inclusive profession. Two generations of women engineers reflect on what needs to happen in our engineering profession to attract and retain women. Let's honour the memory of the 14 women who lost their lives by continuing to work towards a more diverse and inclusive engineering profession. https://lnkd.in/gcv3bSWT #14notforgotten, #Dec6

Happy International Women in Engineering Day to all the smart and hardworking women engineers out there! ThermOmegaTech's Project Engineer, Tania Bobby, has worked in the field for over four years. "It can feel intimidating for those interested in engineering to explore this amazing career because women may think it's not for them since they don’t see enough representation," she says. "Women in Engineering Day showcases and celebrates women in engineering and their contributions and highlights the importance of #diversity in a field that thrives on diverse ideas and creative solutions to today’s problems," she explains. "This event creates a space for conversation between those considering engineering and current engineers they can relate to on a more personal level. Having that kind of representation makes the idea of becoming an #engineer feel attainable. Creating that atmosphere and providing that encouragement is why I believe “Women in Engineering Day” is important," she states. #WomenInEngineering #WomenEngineers Read more about how our engineers help others in their projects: https://lnkd.in/eGhWQRRp
