🛹🥇The Olympic Games are using AI to enable multi-camera 3D Replay. 🔥 Reminiscent of Matrix's "bullet time" effect, it turns the athletes performances into "liquid" experiences available to all on TV broadcast. 🏆 The Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) has partnered with Alibaba Cloud to create cloud-based multi-camera replay system that uses machine learning and deep neural networks to create detailed 3D scenes. 🎥 Cameras placed around the venues capture footage, which is then transformed into high-quality 3D models. This allows for smooth and realistic virtual frames from new angles, making actions like rotation more fluid. 🎾 During Paris 2024, the AI-enabled replay system will be used at 12 competition venues for events including beach volleyball, tennis, judo and rugby. 🏀 I have spent several years exploring the concept of 3D replay to enable virtual camera controls. This led to a US patent and a proper launch with the NBA in 2022; bringing to life the most iconic dunks with customized 3D avatars (as part of the Pixel Arena). While the Paris 2024 replay is not interactive, I am excited to see this type of experience brought to so many viewers. Sport is liquid 💧 #paris2024 #genai #sport #sportai #3Dreplay
The advantage of the bullet time technique in The Matrix is that the subject continues their movement in slow motion without distortions 😍
Nice 😊 Can’t wait to see this in VR or Apple Vision Pro.
EA skate vibes and I'm so here for it 🔥😎
Saw this yesterday and I gotta say it looked so out of place. The concept is cool but if it takes you out of the action it doesn’t seem that valuable as a tech.
The IBM Japan team announced a similar case project with Canon in 2021. https://global.canon/en/vvs/
Feel Like in Tony Hawk 😍
Things no one asked for for $800, Alex
They did stuff like this 15 years ago. No AI needed... https://youtu.be/FR_ZD-5FaKA?t=68
The technology is cool. It's use in the Olympics is strange though. No real advantage, it looks like a technical gimmick, a solution without a problem to solve. Also, its fidelity is completely different than the main cameras, which is taking you out of the immersion. All in all, for me a net negative for the consumer, sorry to say.
PhD in Robotics.
2moReplay Technologies has such demo from the 2012 Olympics. The company was later acquired and resulted in Intel True View, which was used in NBA, NFL,M LB, etc . They even won an Emmy award for the development. Trying to brand this as new is laughable. https://youtu.be/N1kgt2VDjdM?si=geSUxDHJCIWTuw5D
