Tennis Shouldn’t Promote Padel at Its Own Expense Let’s be clear—football isn’t promoting rugby. You won’t see football games showcasing rugby at halftime or replacing goalposts with rugby posts. Why? Because rugby is an exit route from football. Sure, you can play both, but with the constraints of time and money, most people will just choose one. Yet, here in the UK, tennis is actively promoting padel, with grants, funding, and a national plan to grow the sport. Padel is often presented as a complementary sport to tennis, promising new members and income for clubs, but at what cost? More and more tennis courts are being converted into padel courts. More and more players are choosing padel over tennis. As a tennis coach, I’m struggling to see how padel truly benefits tennis in the long term. How does the national governing body justify pouring resources into what is essentially an exit route from tennis? Sure, padel is exciting and offers some quick wins for clubs, but by focusing so much on it, we risk diluting the growth and focus on tennis itself. Why are we putting so much effort into promoting another sport that, in many cases, is pulling players away from tennis? It’s time to rethink this strategy. The word “Tennis” comes from the Anglo-Norman term “Tenez.” 2. The modern game of tennis was created in the late 19th century by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield. He secured the patent for the game in February 1874. 3. Wimbledon, or the Wimbledon Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and also considered to be the most prestigious. 4. The longest tennis match took 11 hours and 5 minutes to complete. It was played between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. Ultimately, John Isner triumphed with a score line of 6–4, 3–6, 6–7, (7–9), 7–6(7–3), 70–68 (final set). It was played over three days in 2010. During this match, 123 balls were used and the scoreboard became moot – it could only go to 47-47 and the score went to 70-68. 5. Clay, Hard, Glass, Carpet, and Wood are the five types of court surfaces used in professional tennis.

🎾 Sponsoring tennis is for the big players Wimbledon Finals are here - and it's hard not to notice Wimbledon's care to enhance its unique image and character through "long-term mutually beneficial Official Partner agreements with a range of blue-chip brands, as well as specifically not commercialising the Grounds overtly." 🍾 Tennis sponsorship paints a unique picture, with one of its most striking aspects being the staggering size of sponsors In fact, across the four grand slams, the average annual revenue of main partners is $25.5bn 💸 A general rule of thumb in the industry is that sponsorship represents around 1% of revenue (i.e. if sponsorship costs $1m, look for companies with annual revenue of $100m+) However, for the slams, the figure is nearer 0.1%! What I do for quick tournaments with inter-school events is play best of 3 sets, but each set is till 3 only. First to 4 point tie-breaker at 2-2. Matches finish in the blink of an eye. All the U19 events around here have the no-let rule. The players are not too keen on it. The ball hitting the net on serve is a blatant disadvantage to the receiver and really demoralizes the receiver. However, infinite lets take forever. Why not simply count all lets as a fault? Two lets and that’s a double fault? It’s win-win!
