Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has introduced several initiatives to enhance #sustainability in the meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (#MICE) sector, fortifying its status as a ‘World’s Best MICE City’. Key efforts include the #LegacyToolkit, a Singapore #MICE Industry Carbon and Waste Baselining Study that aims for #carbonneutral participation at international tradeshows. The Legacy Toolkit assists #eventorganizers in designing impactful business events. It includes case studies and encourages #collaboration with local organizations like the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Center. Additionally, the #MICEIndustry Carbon and Waste Baseline exercise establishes #sustainabilitymetrics focusing on #energy, #water, and #waste. This data helps #STB monitor and update #carbonemission baselines, fostering #wastereduction and #decarbonization strategies. According to Yap Chin Siang, Deputy Chief Executive, #STB, these initiatives aim to guide the #MICE industry toward #sustainability and provide practical means for event organizers to create lasting benefits in Singapore. The board also targets #carbonneutral participation at major international #MICEevents starting in 2024, including IMEX Frankfurt, IMEX America, and IBTM World. In the bustling expo of SETA - Sustainable Energy Technology Asia, where industry leaders and innovators converge at SustainAsia Week 2024, I caught up with Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President of the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB). His presence at the VIP Opening Ceremony and Show Review of the convention underscored a broader narrative: Thailand's ambitious journey toward a more sustainable business events industry. At the heart of this movement is TCEB's unwavering commitment to integrating sustainability into Thailand's MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) sector. As the first Asian nation to champion eco-friendly practices within this domain, Thailand has leveraged its green initiatives not merely as a marketing tool, but as a genuine commitment to environmental stewardship. Under TCEB’s leadership, Thailand has rolled out an impressive array of sustainability-focused initiatives. These include the Thailand Sustainable Event Management Standard (TSEMS), the Sustainable Event Professional Certificate (SEPC), and a comprehensive set of Thailand Sustainable Event Guides. The bureau's innovative approach extends to carbon neutral events, food waste prevention strategies, and the "Farm to Functions" concept, which connects local agricultural produce directly with event catering. The crowning achievement is the Thailand MICE Sustainable Destination Master Plan, a roadmap designed to steer the industry toward enduring eco-conscious practices. The results of these initiatives are palpable. The Thai MICE industry is not only gaining international acclaim for its eco-friendly credentials but is also seeing a marked increase in event business and successful bids. 🌿 The 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗠𝗦𝗖) was launched today to equip and certify businesses for adopting sustainable practices in events and raise #sustainability standards across Singapore’s #MICE industry. This is a major step forward in our sustainability journey.   Developed by SACEOS with the support of Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and in consultation with members and industry players, the Singapore MSC is a well-recognised and locally developed initiative with a new framework that builds on the first MICE Sustainability Certification introduced in 2016. The Singapore MSC aims to reinforce Singapore’s position as a leading sustainable MICE destination.   The Singapore MSC is aligned with the targets set out in the MICE Sustainability Roadmap , which includes the development of a set of sustainability standards and a certification framework by 2023 that the industry can readily apply, and to achieve nationally or internationally recognised sustainability certification for 80% of SACEOS members and the six purpose-built MICE venues by end of 2025.   For this purpose, the Singapore MSC incorporates international benchmarks in certifying MICE players for their adoption of sustainable practices at both an organisational and event level. Uganda Convention Bureau with other DMCs (Destination Management Companies) working on an incentive bid sourced through the prestigious IBTM World platform 2023. This bid, a result of strategic planning and collaboration, promises to bring 80 incentive buyers to Uganda for an immersive 9-day experience. Thanks to CEDP that participation for IBTM and the potential ROI will be rewarding. IBTM, the global leader in connecting the MICE industry, has played a pivotal role in securing this opportunity. As a platform that thrives on fostering connections and driving business opportunities, IBTM has been instrumental in linking Uganda with key players in the incentive travel sector. According to research by the Events Industry Council in 2018, an incentive buyer carries an average spending power of USD 870 per day. KIGALI CONVENTION CENTER: THE FUTURE OF EVENTS IS HERE! Some months ago, I was the Hospitality Lead of a team contracted by asset owners to conduct an Operational Audit of the impressive Kigali Convention Centre and Radisson Blu Hotel and Convention Centre, Kigali. They are a great example of 3 key trends shaping the event industry: sustainability, hybrid experiences, and global reach. How? 1. SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES The KCC isn't just hosting events, they're doing it responsibly: -  Rwandan produce and local businesses are prioritized for catering. This cuts down on their carbon footprint and supports the Rwandan economy. - Water conservation is a priority, with the KCC employing water-saving fixtures – a crucial step in helping manage water scarcity. - Partnering with local waste management companies to ensure responsible disposal, including composting food scraps by supplier farmers. 2. HYBRID EXPERIENCES The KCC's cutting-edge technology and adaptable event spaces make it meeting and event organizers' favourite for hybrid experiences: - Virtual attendees can participate in live sessions and network with those attending in person. This has allowed organisers to achieve wider participation. - Virtually Exploring Rwanda - Visit Rwanda ensures online attendees can virtually explore the beauty of Rwanda through pre-recorded tours and live streams showcasing the country's rich culture, allowing participants to feel connected to the physical location. A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE Ranked 2nd in Africa by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) in 2022, the iconic Kigali Convention Center is the international event planners’ favourite venue for high-profile meetings in East Africa, overtaking Nairobi as the region's epicentre for global events. The KCC is a prime example of how event venues can intentionally implement sustainability initiatives focusing on responsible practices and leveraging technology for global reach.
