Several years ago, while handling a challenging project, a wise mentor asked me, 'do you know who's in your lifeboat?'. Although I understood the question, I pondered its deeper meaning.
Navigating change, whether personal or as a leader, can be tough. During this process, you learn about yourself and others. So, when I face challenges akin to turbulent seas, I reflect on that question - who's in my lifeboat? In our hearts, we know these people. They're the ones who consistently show up, each playing a distinct role in our lifeboat.
❔ Who's your navigator, the one who can read the stars and set the course?
❔ Who's the rower, the one with the stamina and strength to keep your boat moving?
❔ Who's the keeper, the one who maintains supplies and ensures you have what you need?
❔ Who's the leader, the one who keeps morale high and ensures everyone works hard?
This question has always propelled me forward. Moreover, once I've identified my crew, I tell them their roles. Often, we forget to inform people about their significance in our lifeboat. By letting them know their roles and our appreciation, we not only liberate ourselves but also foster commitment in others.
So, if you're navigating change, either personally or as a leader, pause and ask yourself, 'who's in my lifeboat?', 'what role am I assigning them?' and most importantly, let them know!
