PRIORITIZING PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH CULTURAL COMPETENCE In a small town, there lived a young woman named Anna who worked at a community center. Her job involved interacting with people from various cultural backgrounds. Initially, Anna found it challenging to understand and connect with those whose perspectives and experiences differed vastly from her own. Remembering the teaching of Romans 12:10 (NIV), "Be devoted to one another in love. Oh those cultural codes 🤔 So many of them … -> Hard to read when you encounter them at first. -> And often not recognizable as one. -> Tricky to navigate 🧭 You know .. 💋 Kisses on the cheek, yes or no? 🤝 Firm handshake or none at all? 👀 Direct eye contact or look down? 🎁 Open the gift now or later? 🤧 Blow your nose in public or not? 🤐 Speak your mind or not? Learning to understand these codes Is one element of living in a different culture Then you own. The biggest part, we often do not recognize them as such. And that makes life difficult. We think we are doing something wrong. Start to feel insecure. But it is possible to not be tripped up by them. To navigate them with confidence. On a personal note: I have had the privilege of growing up across cultures from the age of 8. My tapestry is rich, but one should not settle. I am open and receptive, aware of so many wonderful, interesting, and diverse people, places, cultures, communities, books, art, film... that allow me to continue my learning journeys and never settle. Curiosity is so important. Acknowledging what we do not know. Asking with respect. Teaching the younger and older people around us. Learning from the younger and older people around us. Learning from one another. Diversity is so much more than just a word. It is awareness, listening, acknowledgment, actions, learning, allyship. Additionally, as Jennifer Maria Matos Tonndorff made me aware of earlier today, it is also being an accomplice. (thank you :) ) As an accomplice, we commit to supporting someone else (or a community) who is marginalized because of an identity we don't carry.
