The Captivating Myths Behind Clinking Glasses & Other Drinking Traditions From saying cheers to clinking glasses, there are so many drinking traditions we follow to date. But, have you ever wondered where it all began? For this week’s #yekeafunfact, we will be sharing exciting stories of wine and other drinking traditions. Saying Cheers Originating from France, “cheers” is inspired by the word “chiere” which can be translated to “gladness”. Once used to express encouragement, today, the word is commonly used to make a toast to wish someone good health and success. Clinking Glasses The most popular stories behind clinking glasses are from medieval times. One version recounts the practice as a method to check for poison by mixing drinks with others. Another version notes the practice as a method of warding off evil by cheering loudly and making a clinking sound using glasses. A third version mentions clinking as a way to engage the sense of hearing, which completes the involvement of all the senses when drinking wine. There’s also one myth that talks of clinking as a way of spilling wine on the floor so evil spirits can see the drops and leave you alone. Interesting, isn’t it? While we love clinking glasses to this day, thankfully, we’re no longer worried about poisoned drinks or evil presences and can raise a toast only to good times.

You and I have read so much about the #healingpower of a #smile, the #magicalpower of a #smile, and so much more about the 'chemistry' of a smile, but this distinction between two #emotions that get impacted by a smile compelled me to #introspect as to how I handled it, and I am sure it will make you think too... "Expectation" and "Surprise". Some are bound by their duty to smile at you. They welcome you with a smile, they open the door for you with a smile, your own family greets you with a smile when you wake up or come back home... they set an #expectation from themselves and you expect it to happen by default. That smile, their precious smile, whether you respond to it with a smile or just a nod, but do #respect their smile! Then, there are those who do not have many reasons nor have they had the grooming like you to smile... That hawker by the roadside to whom you go regularly and start off with a question, "how much is this for, and that for?" Those poor persons standing outside the restaurant or your place of worship...they expect you to put a coin in their palm or hand over to them the leftover food you got packed from the restaurant. What they least expect from you is a #smile, so go ahead and #surprise them with your smile! After that you help them with anything or not is your #choice, but don't let "smile" be a choice, make it your #identity!

You see, mama's pot, steeped in folklore and guarded with the same tenacity as a miser’s last coin, has a reputation that makes the pharmaceutical giants quiver in their polished boots. These over-processed mixtures, with their lengthy names and uncertain promises, leave us tangled in a web of questions. They might boast grandiose claims, but they lack the simple, unadulterated efficacy of remedies we once held dear and true. Ah, the nostalgia! The yearning for solutions that came from wisdom passed down through generations, now relegated to whispers of yesteryear. Those remedies, infused with nature's own bounty, answered the cries of the ailing without the fanfare of modern medicine. It seems, in our relentless pursuit of progress, we've forsaken the very roots that once grounded us. So, let us gather our ingredients—ginger, lemon, cloves, and a hearty measure of Lipton's finest. Let us brew a tea that not only soothes our throats but also stirs the embers of our forgotten heritage. It’s that time of year once again and we drown ourselves in work, cook, clean repeat.. we are truly over busy and we forget about our own needs.
