Integrated logistics company AP Moller-Maersk is leading the way, as it aims to reach net zero emissions by 2040 with the help of new technologies, new vessels, and green fuels. Now the Danish company has become the first shipping company to be recognised by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its decarbonisation goals. A.P. Moller - Maersk has bold targets, including a 35% reduction in Scope 1 emissions by 2030. The 2040 target aims for a 96% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, plus cutting Scope 3 emissions by 90%. A key part of that roadmap is the introduction of methanol-fuelled container ships,with its first (named Ane Maersk) launched in 2023. In total 18 of these vessels will be delivered by 2025. “This series of vessels will have a transformative impact on our ambition to progress on our industry-leading climate ambitions,” said Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. While the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented a strategy to reach net-zero from international shipping ‘close’ to 2050, Danish company A.P. Moller - Maersk aims to reach net zero by 2040 with the help of new technologies, new vessels, and green fuels. And now Maersk has become the first shipping company to be recognised by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its decarbonisation goals. 𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Green solutions in the maritime industry have become increasingly important due to the environmental impact of traditional shipping practices. These solutions aim to reduce emissions, minimize pollution, and enhance sustainability in the maritime sector. In a recent interview with ShippingWatch, Simona Toma, the Managing Director of OSM Thome Asia, extends a hand to industry peers and competitors, aiming to elevate cooperation and exchange valuable industrial knowledge. She also concurred that "I think, in the long term, we would all, as an industry as such, benefit if we actually work together in areas where we can do so. Sharing lessons learned, sharing trials and experiences, collaborating on strategic projects to improve the overall safety of our workforce, just to name a few." OSM Thome believes that collaboration can benefit the industry in various areas, including the green transition, crew management, and navigating new regulations like greenhouse gas emission rules. While there is a recognition of common challenges, finding a balance between collaboration and competition remains a key challenge. 【The Maersk Family: A Sustainable Business Approach】 The Maersk Group was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark🇩🇰, in 1904 as a shipping company🚢, and in recent years its main areas of activity have been container transport and energy. As a centuries-old family business, there are many aspects of their approach to #Sustainability ♻️ that we can learn from. In 2017, the family established AP Moller Capital P/S, a fund management company, and launched its first African infrastructure fund with a size of US$982 million, focusing on investing in renewable energy and logistics in Africa🌍, echoing its goal of tackling net-zero carbon emissions, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and energy transformation. In August 2021, the Group announced the issuance of an initial 10-year €500 million green bond 💹 to finance one feeder vessel and 12 large ocean-going container vessels in response to the carbon neutrality wave. Meanwhile, the Maersk Group further emphasized its Net Zero Carbon Emissions target in 2022, which will be aligned with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) standards by 2030, with Maersk specifically aiming to use green fuels for 25 percent of its seaborne shipments, 30 percent of its air cargo using sustainable aviation fuels, and greening at least 90 percent of its logistics and cold chain, to provide a net-zero carbon emissions supply chain by 2040.
