Data all about data. This deal will allow Walmart to a massive amount of data of what what viewers watch and buy. The deal talks demonstrate the importance of consumer data and ad space for major retailers as they build out their ad businesses and compete with Amazon. In addition to being an e-commerce behemoth, Amazon is among the biggest ad players in the U.S. behind Google parent Alphabet and Facebook owner Meta Platforms. Amazon has also been building its own smart TV business. There is also more competition among retailers hunting for ad dollars with companies including Best Buy, Kroger and Instacart jumping into the business. These days, it’s a rarity for Elizabeth Marsten, Tinuiti’s vp of commerce strategic services, to engage in advertiser discussions that circle solely around Amazon. The trend has shifted toward a more inclusive approach, roping in Walmart, Target, Instacart, and an ever-expanding list of platforms. These aren’t just a few outliers Marsten’s talking about. Rufus helping more on Prime Day! Some quick searches of both Branded and Non-Branded terms show Rufus appearing in the 6th slot on mobile feeds. This is normally where Sponsored Video placements, but those are now pushed down to #10 for their first appearance of 2 slots. Rufus slot shows a "Need Help Deciding? header with 3 questions for consumers to choose from. Rufus is appearing on many branded and non-branded search terms, but NOT all with some food and beauty terms not showing Rufus. Some Branded terms have Rufus Questions asking "How do "this Brand" compare to competitors. Will be interesting how/if consumers engage much with Rufus in this format and how it impacts Sponsored Video views. The 50 Billon Dollar question with Rufus is how will Amazon keep/increase their ad revenue with the introduction of generative search. So far it looks like Amazon's approach is to answer a query via directing them to a search result. Even if Rufus' answer is a particular product/Brand suggestion (see: Kleenex images in the comments). If the consumer has already made it to position 6, they've bypassed the top-of-fold ads (read: highest CPCs), and now Amazon gets to have another go at getting the consumer to click a top-of-fold ad (Amazon does love a flywheel). Since competitor conquesting is rampant, even brand searches/recommendations aren't safe from prying ads. God forbid they click the 7th position PDP which is organic!

#ecommerce I had the pleasure of speaking with Mike Ryan today. From a wide ranging conversation, I wanted to zero in on #CTV .. I didn't do it justice. At the introduction to the call, Mike asked me about what I learned in eBay that I take forward today. One of things I noticed, rightly or wrongly back then was that when eBay or Amazon made changes, the market followed. There was this macro effect - free shipping and returns became the norm here. And now it is causing so many brands and retailers heartache. It is a false economy IMO. That era will end. But I digress. My usual. CTV, where were we. Alot of fad and trend talk right now particularly around #retailmedia - it is goingnowhere and being everywhere, fast. Walmart buying Vizio is a great example of a macro force and where it will ripple. The purchase of Vizio is no small thing. In the last 24 hours, it has been well written what the strategy is here. A bigger ad network, a physical infrastructure that powers in home advertising and gathers 1P data. I am working on figuring out, were Walmart togive every housedhold a free TV, what the cost vs payback periodwould be. I am guessing, less than3 years. But there is no glass ceiling here. TV is now a format, a display size not an isolated entertainment box nestled in the living room corner. Walmart demonstrated their strategy chops yesterday. A retailer with 4 other core business streams. Retail media is one. The beauty here is, this is not a new product. It is a commodity that is highly replaceable and incredibly affordable, but damnpowerful. Amazon know this too. And want more of it. This is about access - access to demand side platforms and now supply side - Walmart are covered on both fronts. Amazon are keen to expand theirs according to a digiday article. "These deals typically involve the arrangement of “connecting Amazon demand at a low fee for high signal integrity with various sellers. This essentially translates into striking deals with ad tech vendors to secure special pricing in exchange for preferential treatment." Here in Ireland/UK, Sky already rolled this out. Using their strong subscription base to do so. Sky Glass (connected TV) can be rolled into your next sky bundle and a 2 year contract ensues. Impact on consumers We are a part of an ever growing 360 barrage of content entering into our lives, on all channels, all devices, all of the time. This narcotization effect will be tough to make brands stand out. Innovation will be key here, brand partners and watch for sports merch to lead the charge on great case studies. Impacts on Brands Retail space we didnt know we had, now we need. And we are in a competitive dogfight for that space. The ad battles that for two decades made and broke brands is coming down their throats fast. The better insights platforms and teams executing will gain trust faster.
