This is how Air India Limited ,an aviation company which was once declared a failure,plans to not only re-establish itself but also dominate the Indian aviation industry. By the year 2021,Air India was already into huge debts worth INR 33,392 Crore(USD 4.2 Billion). But despite the above fact,the Tata Group had different plans with the company. In October 2021,the tata group acquired Air India from the government for a whopping INR 18000 Crore(USD 2.3 Billion). In November,2022,the Tata group acquired Air Asia Company Limited and merged it with Air India Express(the low cost carrier of Air India). In the same month,Air india's merger with Vistara - TATA SIA Airlines Ltd. was announced with Singapore Airlines being the partner of Tata group. On 14 February 2023, the Tatas made an incredible,mind-blowing announcement. Air India announced an order for 470 aircraft consisting of including 250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing at a cost of US$70 billion, which set the record for the world's largest aircraft order at the time. With this order being delivered,Air India will establish itself as the largest aviation company in India(in terms of fleet size)leaving behind IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) by a huge number of 240 aircrafts. Also it will become the world's 7th largest airline. This huge fleet will allow Air India to conquer a huge market share in the domestic market and give a strong competition to Indigo,which currently has the largest market share in domestic aviation. Also,it will enter the international market with full force and a strong competition with only 6 airlines outnumbering the Air India fleet size. Air India to increase cargo capacity by 300% in next 5 years: CEO Campbell Wilson… New Delhi - Air India has announced plans to triple its annual cargo capacity by 2028. CEO of the national carrier, Campbell Wilson says he sees enormous potential in the cargo ecosystem. “Our cargo division is implementing a series of strategic measures aimed at fostering growth and strengthening our market presence,” campbell said. “The large passenger belly capacity addition will be augmented with the launch of value-added products and services across the network.” Wilson says the belly capacity of the Air India fleet will grow significantly over the next few years, given the carrier’s expected influx of new wide-body aircraft to its fleet this year. In addition to pre-existing orders, deliveries from its 470-strong aircraft order in February are expected to start later this year. Wilson says the extra aircraft will add two million tonnes annually (a 300% increase) to Air India’s cargo capacity within five years. India has ascended to the third position in the global aircraft buying market, trailing only the United States and China. This significant milestone was announced by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia at the Wings India event in Hyderabad on January 18. Scindia provided an overview of the orders placed by Indian aviation companies with major aircraft manufacturers, Boeing and Airbus. Leading airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, and the newly launched Akasa airline have placed substantial orders, contributing to India’s elevated ranking. At the event, Scindia unveiled the Air India Airbus A350, a testament to the airline’s commitment to expanding its fleet. He also shared the government’s ambitious plans for the aviation sector, which include increasing the number of airports in the country to 200 by 2030 and achieving a passenger traffic milestone of 300 million by the same year. The minister highlighted the recent robust growth in passenger traffic, indicating a positive trend in the industry. IndiGo leads the pack with an order of 500 aircraft, followed closely by Air India with 470 aircraft. Akasa airline has also joined the race with an order of over 200 aircraft. Air India placed a firm order for 470 planes from Airbus and Boeing last year, with an option for an additional 70. The firm order with Airbus includes 210 A-320/321 Neo/XLR and 40 A350-900/1000, while the firm order with Boeing consists of 190 737-Max, 20 787s, and 10 777s. This is the most substantial Boeing order in South Asia. IndiGo, under its expansion plan, has partnered with Turkish airlines to extend its reach to Europe. In February last year, the airline ordered nearly 500 more aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.
