Nautical design and interior design were at the heart of the first edition of the Blue Design Summit in La Spezia, a region where the Blue Mile is located, that mile of road which hosts a significant portion of the elite of international shipbuilding. At the Blue Design Summit, discussions centered around sustainability, sailing yachts, luxury cruises, and superyachts, as well as innovative materials and interior design. Multi-award winner MY ACE, the 45-meter fully-customized motor yacht we delivered as OR & Project Manager in early 2023, was awarded three Neptunes at this year's BOAT International Media Desing & Innovation Awards hosted in Kitzbuhel, Austria last weekend. We navigated the client from the initial idea to the maiden voyage, including team selection, project development, and construction. By carefully listening to the client's design, space, performance, and sailing needs, we proposed and developed the ACE team, layout, and technical features. Working with a team of renowned excellence in the yachting and design industries, we managed the project focusing on finding the best combination of aesthetics, technique, functionality and quality. MY ACE won three awards in three different categories: 1_BEST NEW SERIES In the judges' view, the boat has a modern straight bow design and features a five-stateroom general arrangement that can be customized. It has an efficient hull and can achieve displacement speed and deliver transatlantic range. Additionally, the boat has a transverse tender garage, two al fresco dining options, an infinity pool, a dedicated beach club, and a bridge deck cinema. An efficient hull allows relatively small engines to achieve displacement speed and deliver transatlantic range. 2_BEST INTERIOR DESIGN - Motor Yachts 499GT and below, 40m and above In the judges' view, Ace is a yacht that lives larger than her length and tonnage, thanks to some design tricks based on simplicity and mirrored window mullions. The designer applied interesting geometric details and a pleasing colour palette. Most furniture is free-standing for a fluid, informal concept. The look relies on a few carefully picked materials, with light wood, marble, grey leather, light-coloured fabric and dark metal taking the lead. Light is used consciously to lend depth, create volume and shape perceptions of the spaces. 3_BEST NAVAL ARCHITECTURE - Displacement Motor Yachts In the judges' view Ace, an owner’s first custom yacht, began with a proven hull platform for yachts of 30 to 40 metres that was stretched and then modified with a straight bow for increasing volume, lengthening the waterline and reducing resistance through the speed range. CFD testing showed that the yacht could reach her designed hull speed with just a pair of 500kW engines. Ace's top speed is 13 knots, with an impressive range of over 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. Interestingly, the naval architects also took the ease of construction for the yard and ease of maintenance for the crew into consideration. Sized between 80 and 120ft there are just the quintessential mediterranean fun boats, synonymous with outdoor living and having a good time on the water. A new era of crossover design… Shipyards at full capacity until 2026-2027, record sales, new shipyards opening, but where is the market going? What is it demanding? The Superyacht Group spoke with Michele Dragoni, founder of Dragoni Design Lab, a design studio specialising in both exterior and interior yacht design, about where the market is heading. The current yacht market is marked by disparities between large and small yards, with limited capacity in smaller yards leading to longer lead times due to resource constraints. Major Italian shipyards primarily focus on series production, creating difficulties in securing build slots for custom yachts. As a result, there's a growing preference for series products, particularly fibreglass hulls, due to shorter construction times. This trend is fuelled by customers' desire for quicker delivery and increased customisation options. The market is also witnessing a shift towards more sophisticated and personalised designs, moving away from standard features.
