An invisible sustainability scandal lurks beneath fashion’s surface. Microplastics may be imperceptible to the human eye, but the scale of the issue is vast. Last year the European Environment Agency estimated that more than 14 million tonnes of microplastics have accumulated on the world’s ocean floor. About 8% of microplastics in Europe's oceans are from synthetic textiles. Globally, this is 16%-35%. Between 200,000 and 500,000 tonnes of micro-plastics from textiles enter the global marine environment each year. Microplastics have been detected in the human body after being consumed via food or water, or even breathed in – they can shed from clothing as wearers move around, entering the air. Researchers have found microplastics in one in four fish and observed growth issues and abnormal behaviour as a result.
