Should we in the Western world be concerned about what dominates U.S. political discourse being anti-intellectualism and attacks on objectivity, today? “Yes”, is the short answer. An American liberal historian, Richard Hofstadter (August 6, 1916 – October 24, 1970), who received the Pulitzer Prize, twice, wrote about the subject more than 50 years ago and listening to the “Anti-Intellectualism in American Life” from 1963 you will realize, that what made the Trump’ election possible in American politics is no coincidence. “The Paranoid Style” from Hofstadter, which appeared in 1965, is also another highly relevant publication from Hofstadter in order to understand what’s going on today. Hofstadter believed that an appreciation of skepticism and nuance, a rejection of absolutism and principles or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true (dogma) were crucial to a democratic society. So, should we in the Western world be concerned about anti-intellectualism today and attacks on objectivity as Hofstadter wrote about regarding the culturel make-up of America? Part II: https://lnkd.in/eED3NyTV The short answer is “Yes”!

1/2: **Title: The Role of Tangential Thinking in Addressing Racial Bias and Promoting Justice: Insights from Historical Movements** 3. **American Revolution:** The American Revolution provides an example of tangential thinking in its conceptual break from the prevailing British colonial governance model. The colonists’ shift towards a democratic republic was a significant departure from the monarchial system, emphasizing individual freedoms and democratic governance, which were not priorities under British rule. **Application in a Diverse Society Like New Zealand:** In New Zealand, a country grappling with its colonial past and the resulting disparities between the indigenous Māori population and the predominantly white settlers, tangential thinking can provide novel pathways to justice and reconciliation. For instance, considering indigenous frameworks of law and community engagement in the justice system could lead to more culturally appropriate and effective legal practices. This approach involves stepping away from a Eurocentric view of justice to incorporate Māori concepts like "Te Ao Māori" (the Māori worldview), which emphasizes balance, restoration, and collective well-being. **Conclusion:** Tangential thinking is crucial in diverse societies as it promotes the questioning of normative structures and the exploration of alternative methods and solutions, particularly in systems as complex as justice. In the context of New Zealand, employing tangential thought can lead to a more inclusive approach that acknowledges and integrates the unique cultural, historical, and social contexts of all racial groups, potentially leading to a fairer and more just society. Understanding and implementing this kind of thinking can also offer ways to address and correct historical biases and promote a more equitable legal system.
