In celebrating Women’s History Month, NorthBay Health invited a number of our strong female colleagues to share thoughts on a variety of topics. Today meet Heather Resseger, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, who answers the question: Name three important qualities that women should have to be successful. Are they the same for men? Be Bold and Be Brave. Use your voice and be willing to stand up for what you believe, to challenge the status quo, and to protect your team. You don’t have to be anything other who you are. Women are smart, creative, and can connect business and the heart to drive change and to improve outcomes. Our voice matters and we should demand to not only be at the table, but to have a voice at the table, and -- if we are the best -- to lead the table. Be a transformational leader. Developing and mentoring others is a powerful tool in all businesses but in healthcare where we are people caring for people and it can unlock the potential of those that we lead. We are not experts at everything and usually the best ideas come from our teams. Transformational leaders level the hierarchy in an organization, can be empathetic, strategic and visionary, all while harnessing the power of others. It gives me pride to be connecting and supporting world-class leaders. Do the names Anne McLaren, Rosalind Franklin, or Elsie Widdowson ring a bell? Freeze, Fix or Fake.  At the COLORADO WOMEN'S BAR ASSOCIATION Conference a few weeks ago, speaker Dimple Dhabalia, author and founder of Roots in the Clouds, presented a slide titled “The 5 Fs of Surviving.”  When we are triggered, our brain goes to fight, flight, freeze, fix or fake. This was the first time I had heard “Fix” and realized I have tended to vacillate between Freeze and Fix as a leader. I have historically carried a strong desire to please others and I realized this is a weakness when it comes to leadership. Over the last few years, I have been working to transform this. First I intellectually understood it, and then I focused on increasing my own self-worth and decreasing my co-dependence on others. At the three conferences I went to a few weeks ago, the consensus was that strong self-care is a foundation to good leadership. I agree. It also enables us to be strong enough to dig deeper into who we are and how we show up.  If we are not strong and brave, we cannot fully and truly look at ourselves. #womeninleadership #womeninbusiness #leadershiptips #thriveinyourlife #thriveatwork
