Another segment in the climate solutions series. This company pioneered a technology that combines CO2 with "green hydrogen" (i.e., created through electrolysis using excess wind or solar power) to create an ethanol that can be used for sustainable aviation fuel. This helps solve two challenges at once: (1) what to do with captured CO2 so that it doesn't just leak back into the atmosphere, and (2) how to produce ethanol without diverting vast quantities of agricultural land and food to biofuels. This is a technology that is accessible and scalable even in less-developed countries. This is the kind of innovation that is going to make a difference, and is worth investing in.

LanzaTech and LanzaJet have introduced CirculAir, an innovative initiative aimed at transforming waste, carbon, and renewable power into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This breakthrough offering provides a cost-effective and commercialized alternative to Fischer-Tropsch technology, creating eFuels, power-to-liquids, and waste-to-fuels using an already ASTM-approved SAF production pathway. This pathway leverages ethanol as the bio-intermediate and alcohol-to-jet technology to produce SAF and renewable diesel. “CirculAir brings to market a revolutionary, integrated pathway to convert carbon and waste inventories across our global society, as well as the ability to utilize emerging renewable power supply and CO2 through direct air capture as an economical and commercially viable approach to creating SAF,” said Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet. CirculAir utilizes technology to convert various waste materials into SAF on a large scale. Feedstocks include municipal solid waste, agricultural residues, factory emissions, and CO2 captured directly from the air. This initiative highlights the potential of versatile and abundant waste carbon to create reliable jet fuel, significantly reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Here at ISL we have seen an uptick in route optimisation consultancy projects as a result of the Simpler Recycling initiative, specifically, how to manage new and/or expanded #foodwaste collection with current fleets. In Germany one of our route optimisation clients is trialing hydrogen RCVs. Hydrogen vehicles have the potential to be effective in the collection of food waste, especially when compared to electric #RCVs, but their effectiveness depends on several factors. Range and Payload Capacity: Hydrogen vehicles need to have sufficient range and payload capacity to collect food waste from various locations without needing frequent refueling or emptying. Infrastructure: The availability of #hydrogen refueling stations is crucial for the effectiveness of hydrogen vehicles. Without a well-developed refueling infrastructure, hydrogen vehicles may face challenges in completing their collection routes. For local authorities, allocating space within their depots is key. Cost: The cost of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen fuel compared to traditional diesel vehicles as well as electric ones can impact their effectiveness in food waste collection. If the cost of owning and operating hydrogen vehicles is significantly higher, it may affect their widespread adoption in waste management fleets. Many of the current hydrogen RCVs being trialed on the continent are funded through EU R&D schemes so there is no true cost figures upon which to make a judgement. One thing to bear in mind though is to ensure the true, end-to-end costs are considered when comparing electric with hydrogen as well as the impact on the environment, ie, the fuel energy creation has to be considered. Environmental Benefits: One of the main advantages of hydrogen vehicles is their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially if the hydrogen is produced from renewable sources. If the goal of food waste collection is to minimize environmental impact, using hydrogen vehicles can align with that objective. Hydrogen vehicles can be effective in the collection of food waste, especially when paired with a well-developed infrastructure and when considering their environmental benefits. However, their effectiveness may vary depending on specific circumstances and factors such as range, payload capacity, infrastructure, and cost. The trials of hydrogen RCVs in the UK and on the continent are on-going and only time will tell if they are truly cost effective. Unfortunately, we expect that analysis to be available too late for the onset of England wide food waste collection services.

The low-carbon fuels of interest include, but not limited to: biofuels, synthetic fuels, e-fuels, sustainable aviation fuel, natural gas, methanol, ethanol, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), hydrogen, and ammonia. While we often discuss Grandpuits, let's take a moment to delve into its recycling facet. The Grandpuits platform is being converted into a zero-crude platform and will be operational mid 2025. Biofuel production and plastic waste recycling form the backbone of this project, which is part of our ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. One of the main reasons behind the platform's conversion is to transform the Grandpuits refinery into a biorefinery. With a processing capacity of 400,000 metric tons/year, it will be commissioned mid 2025 to produce: ✅ 210,000 metric tons/year of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which will be extended to 285,000 metric tons/year from 2027; ✅ 50,000 metric tons/year of renewable diesel; ✅ 70,000 metric tons/year of renewable naphtha. 👉 Learn more about Grandpuits: https://lnkd.in/eT9y2bgD #Grandpuits #Recycling #Bioenergies #RenewableEnergy
