KUKA is calling for submissions to the Medical Robotics Challenge 2.0 until 28th June! Teams can apply with innovative robotic ideas. The winner will receive €20,000 in prize money and a professional presentation at a major trade show. Our winner of the last Medical Challenge at the KUKA Innovation Award: 2022, a young Danish research team ROPCA impressed the jury and won the Medical Robotics Challenge. Their innovative concept revolves around ARTHUR, an arthritis-scanning robot based on the LBR Med. With its soft-scan mode and robot-ultrasound interaction, ARTHUR produces high-quality ultrasound images of the joints of arthritis patients. The robot's camera system automatically detects the joints and positions itself for the ultrasound images, which are analyzed by artificial intelligence to calculate disease activity. ARTHUR has the potential to become a global product, and ROPCA plans to make the platform available for other applications. The research explores whether surgical manipulation tasks can be learned on the da Vinci robot via imitation learning. Despite challenges from inconsistent forward kinematics, the team introduced a relative action formulation that enables effective policy training using approximate kinematics data. This method leverages clinical data for robot learning without corrections. Demonstrations included tissue manipulation, needle handling, and knot-tying, showcasing significant advancements in robotics, research, and innovation.
