Lessons learned by observing great bartenders at a bike rally:
🏍️ Be authentically yourself and you will attract the right audience. The folks who successfully work these events have larger than life personalities and remain “on” for hours on end without break. Regulars will come back multiple times a day - sometimes walking past numerous other bars - for a bartender they love. These women know how to be themselves and dial it up. And it works.
🏍️ Speed and competency are non negotiable. With a line 30 people deep for hours on end, there is no room for inefficiency. Differing price points on various products sold means quick calculations made in one’s head are a must. Swift math leads to fast moving lines, happy attendees, and ultimately more money in the tip jar (the ONLY source of revenue for these bartenders, for the entire event). Competency is the name of the game.
🏍️ Be kind, to everyone, all the time. These bartenders smile and express genuine gratitude to every single customer, tip or no tip. Thankful to the bar backs, who may be grumpy themselves after a long day of moving ice and product. Remembering to tip the gal working the porta-potty line.
