How to Scale Innovation Using Challenge Prizes Research-based Recommendation 3: Design a clear strategy to address institutional barriers To contribute to lasting, system-level change, challenge prize designs should consider the strategic levers they can engage to address or navigate around institutional barriers, including those related to markets and regulation. Such barriers include corruption and unfair competition, or a lack of harmonised regulatory environment across countries, limiting regional scaling. It has been recognized that #innovation drives the long-run #economicgrowth of nations and increasingly #governments are placing innovation at the center of their economic #growthstrategies. In this study, a systems of innovation approach is employed to examine what enables improvements in innovation potential among developed countries. Using #data from the 2017 #GlobalInnovationIndex (GII) Report, the authors subjected 770 data measures to an analysis of 242 relationships involving changes in the #GII’s innovation inputs/outputs scores and overall innovation potential of 35 #OECD countries over a five-year period (2012 to 2016). Based on the findings, the authors argue that instituting policies that improve access to open and competitive markets is the most significant enabler for raising a developed country’s #innovationpotential. Why SSUS Matters: Ideating, innovating, failing & trying again SHOULD NOT be a luxury! Reason 2: Science, technology, and innovation are crucial to Africa's development. Yet, most of the time, Africa is a mere recipient rather than a producer. We therefore need to support our young people in growing their ideas into businesses that integrate Science and technology by creating safe spaces that complement the formal education system from a very young age. Where they can come through to ideate, innovate, and enterprise iteratively. These look like our Innovator Hub Clubs at Elevate Trust whose activities cumulate to the Student Start-Up Summit. Innovation by nature is a trial and error process. My point has always been that Ideating, innovating, failing & trying again really ought not to be a luxury. Entrepreneurship, as we currently know it, is mostly a survival tactic and not a strategic plan. It's not surprising coz spaces for teaching one the process, trying out, enabling one to build an MVP don’t exist. If Science, technology and innovation is to be a solution to Africa’s problems then its practice ought not to be a luxury.
