This week I've been thinking a lot about deepfakes... A week ago to the day this was me, happy to be at Disneyland with my sister and oldest friend for a girls getaway. And just a few hours later after taking this pic, a sinus infection set in that put me on a mini rollercoaster that I'm still trying to get off 😵💫 Like so many before me, I've been working through my head cold, dialing into video conferences sans video and croaking in with my feedback when needed. Which had me wondering: wouldn't it be great if I had a cloned filter of my voice and my face? Present myself the world in my best health, so it not be a point of distraction? But then maybe that's a step in the wrong direction. Showing we are working through hardships isn't a sign of weakness, nor should it be expected that we always are at peak performance. There are many interesting ethical and legal issues we'll need to consider as these technologies become more pervasive. In the meantime, let me go back to my box of tissues and pineapple juice #deepfakes

A week-long sinus infection couldn't keep me off LinkedIn for such a big day: Happy EU AI Act Day! It's officially in effect, though it will actually be phased out over a 2 year period (3 for a subset of High Risk AI systems). Is it somewhat fitting that the Paris Olympics also coincide with this big day for AI? As AI regulations, governance, and compliance continues to emerge and become more mature, we'll still have new forms of emerging tech popping up to keep us busy. #euaiact #ailaws #airegulations #aiethics

Olga V. Mack and I are at it again, with another co-authored article on the impact of Gen AI to an incredibly scarce resource: time! This article not only makes me think about how Gen AI can give us back more time to focus on more challenging, creative, novel works. It also makes me think about a conversation I had with Elena Gurevich and Alisa S. on their podcast series AI and Real Life: Not Your Usual Take - where we touched briefly on how the increasing volumes of GenAI content will elevate human-authored content. In other words, will we start to value original human-created content as it might not be as predictable as the AI-created content? I've officially received my certificate from tbe Saïd Business School, University of Oxford AI Programme. It was 6 weeks of learning about AI from a perspective that's a bit different from how I've engaged with it over the past 10 years in my legal practice. Diversifying our experiences are incredibly important - it let's us identify gaps in knowledge, blind spots, and gives us the creative edge to solving problems. Always being curious and always learning might be exhausting at times but it's definitely worth the effort 👌 #airegulations #aiethics #aisafety

Sometimes Saturdays are for exploring... AI models aren't the only things that need to keep their training data diverse for continuous improvement - new data (in this case, experiences) are good for our brains, too! For me that meant an excursion to a few art museums in Fort Worth with my husband. We ate in the Modern Art Museum Cafe, saw a painting of a bowl of strawberries that the Kimbell Art Museum fought France for, enjoyed an exhibition of floor to ceiling Renaissance tapestries, and stumbled upon a demonstration of historical fencing! In other words, lots of new things for my brain to think about! #aiattorney #texasattorney

Hot off the presses thanks to Raymond Sun, the EU AI Act has been published to the EU Official Journal, with an official publishing date of July 12, 2024. That date will in turn kick off other key dates as the EU AI Act enters force in a phased period over two years. I can't remember another event that was resulted in so many LinkedIn breaking announcements. The past 9 months has been a wild ride as we watched the EU work this legislation through its long path. Now the hard work will really begin, as the EU AI Office works towards developing guidelines to help inform what those enforcement and compliance obligations might be at an operational level. #euaiact #eiaioffice #aiact #ailegislation
