Read Across America Week is celebrated from March 2 to 6. It begins on the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading. Reading to and with young children, even infants, has many benefits, including, but not limited to: :: Supported cognitive development :: Improved language skills :: Preparation for academic success :: Developing a special bond with your child :: Increased concentration and discipline :: Improved imagination and creativity :: Cultivating a lifelong love of reading Ensuring children are on the right path to learning to read is part of being kindergarten-ready. Literacy is an essential skill, not just for their school life growing up, but for navigating life as an adult and expanding job opportunities. Celebrate reading! And to acknowledge Dr. Seuss, when you read, "Oh, the places you'll go!" Share in the comments one of your fave books as a child!

Children are born learning, but the language pathways in their brains must be built with purpose, and wired to learn to read 🧠 “Just exposure to words is the single most important thing that you can do to help build the language pathways in your child’s brain,” says Laura Phillips, PsyD, the senior director of the Learning and Development Center at the Child Mind Institute. When you cuddle up to read with your child, you’re familiarizing them with new vocabulary – but also with the concept of books! When you turn pages together, point to words as you’re reading, and help them connect the shapes, sounds, & names of letters, you are building critical pre-literacy skills. Literacy- the key to unlocking life!
We believe every child deserves the chance to succeed, and that starts with being able to read. Through our collaborative efforts on the Literacy and Justice for All initiative, supported by the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation and the experts at the Rollins Center for Language and Literacy at the Atlanta Speech School, we’re giving children the tools they need for a bright future. From early learning to partnerships with local hospitals and schools, we're setting them on a path to success! 💡Did you know that In Marietta City Schools, the results show that third-grade reading scores jumped five times higher than the state and metro Atlanta averages? On International Literacy Day, we celebrate the power of words and the importance of nurturing even our youngest learners. Through our interactive Learning Spaces and programs that support parents and caregivers, we’re shaping what’s possible for the next generation of readers.

Join Headway in celebrating National Read Across America Day 2024! Launched in 1998, Read Across America celebrates reading and educates people about its benefits, especially among children and young adults. Cultures all around the world have been documenting their stories in writing for thousands of years, creating histories that can still be read today. While there were periods of time when reading was a skill shared only among the wealthiest and most highly educated, today literacy rates have climbed all around the world. Reading has blossomed into a fun and empowering hobby that stokes the imagination and allows people of all ages to embrace new perspectives and new ideas. Here are some ways you can celebrate and join the fun! 📚 Read to students at your local school or community center. 📚 Share reading links on your social channels such as your favorite authors or places to read like book or coffee shops or libraries. 📚 Start a book club with friends, colleagues, and family. 📚 If you're a teacher, create a cozy reading nook to encourage reading during the school day. 📚 Host an author signing with your book club. 📚 Make reading part of your daily life. 📚 Renew your library card!

Transitions are an integral aspect of international education. We move between schools and countries and also find ourselves making moves within our schools when our jobs and roles change. On top of that, we experience the normal life transitions such as navigating the stages of life, possibly raising children, taking care of aging parents, and so on -– but we do so while living overseas. Transitions are so important that we made it one of the five categories on our Educators Going Global website! In Episode 34, https://lnkd.in/eTSytvTn we drilled down on what it can look like to shift from being an international educator to taking on a new identity that doesn’t involve teaching. In the episode, David spoke about how he designed and applied a PERMAH Pivot Plan to help him transition from international education to the next phase of his life. Here is a blog post that describes and links to the plan. https://lnkd.in/euKVNVfh At first glance, the plan might seem overwhelming, but David can only say entire books have been written about transitioning from one phase of our lives to another. ;) The plan was originally created to help fellow international educators manage their transitions among schools and countries. However, it applies to any significant transition on the horizon. It could help you next time you face one of the big changes described in this post!
