If I tell you that I flew in the VIP section, I mean the rear fifth section of the plane, not first class. Perks include: * Perfect for celebs who want to hide in plain sight from annoying fans and the paparazzi. paparazzi. (“Is that…? No; it couldn’t be. Not in seat 37B!”) * Immediate access to flight attendants (no call button needed; they’re right behind you!) * Priority access to restrooms * Extra 20 minutes to finish that inflight movie you should have started watching at take off, while waiting for the non-VIPs to disembark * Flight attendants in VIP are nice because they want to be, not because they have to be; not like those snooty first-class flight attendants. (Or so I’ve heard. You didn’t get that from me; I ride in first class frequently and don’t want to get on their bad side.) Are you on the right ship? In the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, the Flying Dutchman ship has a very peculiar trait. With every year that passes, the crewmen become less human, their bodies taking on traits from the sea, until eventually they become part of the Flying Dutchman itself. I remember that being an alarming aspect of the plot in those movies, and I think in a lot of ways, something similar is happening to all of us every day. We are all part of some kind of “ship.” For many, it’s the organization you work for. For others, it might be a sports team or social group. Since you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, simply taking a step back and taking note of what ship you’re on and who is onboard with you, will give you a pretty clear picture of where you’re headed. Like it or not, you are becoming more and more like your ship every day. Eventually, you will be part of the Flying Dutchman itself. So the question is, are you in an organization and around people with traits you want to emulate or does something need to change? Find your ship that is full of people you respect, can learn from, and want to become more like.
