Wan Hai Lines and Yang Ming Marine Transport — two of Taiwan’s largest container lines — are investing an estimated combined $2.5 billion on new and second-hand vessels on the back of big gains in their respective first-half net profits, the carriers announced Monday. Evergreen Marine, Taiwan’s biggest carrier, will report its interim results Tuesday. The largest deals were agreed by Wan Hai Lines at a board meeting Monday for up to 20 methanol-capable dual-fuel container ships that will be operated by Wan Hai Lines (Singapore). The carrier said it has signed a letter of intent with Taiwan shipbuilder CSBC Corporation for 12 8,000-TEU containerships with options for another four similar-sized vessels. The total value is worth between $1.23 billion and $1.98 billion, Wan Hai said.
