Last week I shared my first UX-focused template for Notion. And this week, I'm hoping to share my thinking behind the template, how I went about building it, the challenges I faced and the results to-date. So similar, to what I did when I was about to write an article about my "100 Things" challenge, what would you want to know about the making of my UX writing checklist? Do you want to really annoy your designer? Then whisper ever so softly into their ear, "We need more real estate for text." Ah yes, the dreaded "We need more text." Don't get me wrong, I understand prioritizing design and minimizing text to have a clean and clear UI, but at what cost? I've seen a couple of trends to offload text that are big no-nos. ❌ Placing all the instructional text inside of a tooltip ❌ Using placeholder text instead of instead of labels in form fields ❌ Placing all the instructional/help text inside of knowledge base/help center (without providing links inside the product) ❌ Limiting text altogether, which in turn results in users not being able to complete actions Here are some basic text rules that apply to almost any product: ✅ Pages should have a title/description ✅ Titles should be descriptive ✅ Modals/error messages should have a title that matches the CTA with a clear description of the problem ✅ Add descriptions for fields (don't use tooltips!) ✅ Instructions should always be visible, never make a user search for it ✅ Text shouldn't disappear, there's a high chance of error if you have to remember something ✅ If an action is very complicated and requires more instructions, add a documentation link ✅ Tooltips should never contain vital information for completing a task 👋 If you want to deliver a simple and clear message to the user, let's talk! Not sure if other UX writers agree, but I tend to hyphenate compound nouns that start with a prefix, even if the dictionary I use writes it otherwise—at least those that can be found closed or opened in other dictionaries. My argument is that it makes the compound nouns more legible, especially on mobile. Of course, this doesn’t work with all compound nouns, but those are the examples I could come up with right now 😅: 1️⃣ “Re-evaluate” instead of “reevaluate” 2️⃣ “Co-writer” instead of “cowriter” 3️⃣ “Hand-off” instead of “handoff”
