Network, I’m interested to know, when your hiring into your Platform Engineering teams, how important is it to you that your engineers have the mindset and experience of treating the platform as a product and treating the software engineers as their customers? Is this a hard requirement or something you’re happy to teach ? #platformengineering #PlatformAsAProduct

I have worked across multiple product and infra teams and here is what I noticed I worked in infra teams for first 3 years of my career and working with product team for the last 3 years 1️⃣ User Focus vs. System Focus - Product Engineer: Creates user-friendly features, meeting user needs. - Infrastructure Engineer: Ensures robust, scalable system architecture. 2️⃣ Innovation vs. Stability: - Product Engineer: Driven by creativity, aiming for competitive features. - Infrastructure Engineer: Emphasizes stability and reliability. 3️⃣ Agile Development vs. System Optimization - Product Engineer: Adapts quickly, iterates on features for prompt delivery. - Infrastructure Engineer: Optimizes system efficiency and scalability. 4️⃣ Collaboration vs. Expertise - Product Engineer: Collaborates across teams for user alignment. - Infrastructure Engineer: Specialized in system architecture and particular domain. 5️⃣ Success Metrics: User Satisfaction vs. System Performance - Product Engineer: Measures success through user satisfaction and impact. - Infrastructure Engineer: Measures success by reliable system performance. Did I miss anything ? #softwareengineering #product #infrastructure

The best platform engineering is seamless. It's like infrastructure maintenance. People only notice when something fails. That's a challenge for platform engineers. People can't value something they don’t realize they are relying on.

- Junior engineer -> Delivers a task. - Mid-level engineer -> Delivers a project. - Senior+ engineer -> Delivers a standard. Some of the best engineers I know seem to be working always on docs or proofs of concept. They don't speed up the deliveries of each team by working in the sprint. However, they increase the entire organization's delivery speed through the practices they set in place. What other traits do you love of the senior engineers around you? #softwareengineering #careergrowth
