👇 New blogpost! The next big innovation in social play will likely come from tabletop games - Dungeons & Dragons, board games, Werewolf, Magic etc. In addition to being inherently social, tabletop games today are being reinvented dramatically by modern digital tools such as live-streaming, audio, UGC etc A few quick stats: - D&D counts over 40M players - Magic the Gathering over 35M - China's top Werewolf game hit 70M players in Y1 All are growing at double-digit rates Link to full blogpost below! https://lnkd.in/gH6477u cc Andreessen Horowitz Andrew Chen

Games workshop just had a huge spike in sales of Warhammer stuff despite being a "retail/social" experience during a pandemic. Pretty amazing.

I haven't kept up with D&D since 5e, but I wonder if WoTC/Hasbro's marketing is downplaying the role of miniatures in gameplay. How does their business model evolve as people move away from their tangible products? MtG has an edge here in that the collectible cards can translate into virtually collectible cards. I think D&D not so much. Regardless, it will be an exciting time for those of us that enjoy tabletop-style gaming, for sure.

I've been surprised by the uptake in D&D among adult friends recently.

Excellent analysis of the #ttrpg landscape. Something those of us in the hobby have felt but not quantified. It has some interesting tensions: easier than ever to kickstart a boardgame which increases fragmentation! Aggregated platforms help you find your tribe which then may negate the need for the platform! Fwiw, my contribution to the rise includes listening to the Glass Cannon Podcast, spinning up Roll20 during Covid, and using UGC from dmsguild. :)

Jonathan Lai so happy you mentioned Critical Role! Can’t wait to read this post after work. Amazon Alexa had been developing gaming-specific tools for a while, very keen to see what sort of tech kickstarts the digitization of board games. Before COVID, people loved the tangible aspect of board games. Post COVID, we’re all trying to figure out the best way to play online. One big problem is, while any online game can run in apps like Tabletop Simulator, how can you support an online/offline hybrid session (eg you have 3 people in your house to play Wingspan, and want your online friend to join in)?
