Back in the late 1980s, boys weren’t often cheerleaders. At least not where I grew up. I’m not sure if it was inspired by the adorable uniforms or my inexplicable desire to do the splits as often as possible, but in seventh grade, I came home from school one day and announced to my parents that I wanted to try out for the cheerleading team. My dad looked at me quizzically and shook his head. “I don’t think it’s a good idea,” he proclaimed. “Why not?!” I whined. “Because no daughter of mine should be out there cheering for a bunch of boys to do their best. Not until you see groups of boys cheering for girls. Until that day comes, go do something where you can promote yourself, not some random boy.” I don’t remember exactly how I reacted that evening. I probably sulked in my room and complained on the phone to a few of my friends. I do remember innately knowing that my dad was right. Maybe that’s why I have become such a cheerleader for women. Thank you for your unwavering belief in me, Dad. I’m glad there was at least one male cheerleader in my hometown, and I am grateful that it was you. Happy Father’s Day to you and all the other awesome dads out there - you make the world a better place! #tothetop #happyfathersday
So fortunate Jenna. I share your Dads feelings around cheerleading. The essence is good, but when something gets executed with one gender benefiting, you have to question it. And there are many such examples across cultures. Change starts with these small questions and rebellions. Happy Fathers Day to your dad.

I love this story Jenna Fisher! And thank you for always being a great cheerleader (even if you don't need pompoms for it)!
