When is a law firm partner not actually a partner in the law firm? When they're a non-equity partner. In law firms, being called a "partner" sounds prestigious. And I carried that title proudly when I was a partner at an AmLaw firm. But not all partners are the same. There's something called a non-equity partner, which is a bit different. Non-equity partners get the partner title, but they don't own a piece of the firm (that was me). They're more like senior associates who do a lot of important work and might get paid more, but they don't share in the firm's profits or get to make big decisions. This setup works well for both the firm and the non-equity partner. The firm keeps experienced people around without giving away ownership, and non-equity partners get higher status and pay without taking on the risks of ownership. It can also prevent non-equity partners from being shown the door if they're not ready to be an equity partner (or will never be ready). And those on the outside looking in, often have no idea which partner is which. Is that a bug or a feature of the system? What do attorneys ask their business coaches? Here's a little snippet from my week so far: 🚩 one attorney sent an offer for employment and now has all kinds of red flags about the candidate. How should they deal with this? 🤝another attorney is questioning whether the current structure of the partnership is the correct one moving forward ✖ another is having communication issues with an employee that are now impacting the office environment. Spent nearly a decade in big law, fully expecting to be a lifer. Joined a prestigious firm with the goal of becoming a partner and dedicating an entire career there. But as time passed, two pivotal things shifted the trajectory. Firstly, began to develop a personal business. Secondly, stumbled upon a fascinating realm within the legal industry: litigation boutiques. Without a background in a family of lawyers, the knowledge of different law firms and their specialties was limited. The concept of a litigation boutique was unfamiliar, but their impact was not. These specialized firms were not only serving the same clients as larger counterparts but were also bringing cases to trial, making headlines, and achieving feats that one might not typically associate with big firms in big company litigation.
