Syracuse: Orange Crush Big East basketball was the thing in the 1980’s and Syracuse was in the center of it all. Duane “The Pearl” Washington, Sherman Douglas and Derrick Coleman provided the yin to the yang of St. John’s, Villanova, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall and the rest of the Big East. Then again, I went to Cornell in 1988 and Syracuse basketball was something completely different then as the annual Syracuse/Cornell basketball game was good for a one-way Orange rout and occasionally a fight. But I digress… I was in Syracuse today completing my upstate New York Superfecta of Albany, Buffalo, Rochester and now Syracuse for our terrific CBRE Upstate New York team including Richard Sleasman, SIOR, Darby Fishkin and our Syracuse leader Mark Rupprecht. Appropriate to hit it today but I’d rather do it Saturday as the Belmont will be run at my happy place, Saratoga on Saturday, but this put me in a New York State of Mind. Speaking of New York State of Mind, my message to the big 4 upper staters was the same, upstate New York is rich with natural resources most notably water that will be the key to high tech manufacturing and data centers (i.e. the biggest real estate trends today) and New York should go whole hog after them. The natural resources combined with the world class talent in the region including Syracuse University, Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY Binghamton University, University at Albany & Buffalo State University and proximity to international skilled labor leader Canada should propel upstate New York if you can attract the manufacturers & better tie to Canada. It’s a dog-eat-dog world of state incentives to attract these groups, but New York needs to up its game as Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and others are playing for keeps. Syracuse, Cornell & Upstate NY. In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to work with the New York Mets organization for a season. I want to emphasize that for anyone aspiring to work in sports, it is not an easy path, and relationships truly matter. Whether it's with your supervisor or your coworkers, never underestimate the value of these connections. I have a deep appreciation for two individuals, Jenn and John, who have had a significant impact on me. They have shown me that having a full-time job in sports is not just about the title or the paycheck, but it's about the passion and dedication they bring to their roles. Jenn, who works as a high school math and special education teacher, has managed to make it work with her job at the Mets for the past 10 years. Similarly, John, who has been with the organization for 12 years, balances his full-time job as a head varsity basketball coach at St. John's Preparatory School alongside his role with the Mets. What these two remarkable individuals have in common is their passion for empowering others and their exemplary leadership skills. Even to this day, I can relate to them both professionally and personally. Jenn's role as an educator and her dedication to special needs students resonates with me, while John's coaching expertise and commitment to his players inspire me. The lesson here is that for those who aspire to have a full-time job in the sports industry, it's important not to get your hopes up too high and to be prepared to put in extra effort. Sometimes, fulfilling your dreams may involve juggling multiple jobs. But trust me, the more effort you put into life, the more fulfilling it will be. So keep up the hard work and never lose sight of your goals. And of course, it's always a great feeling when you can make it back to a game and catch up with old colleagues in person.
