Scientists Say They've Found Thousands of Mysterious Circles Around the World: Researchers using artificial intelligence have discovered thousands of new "fairy circles" in various locations around the world. These unique vegetation patterns have perplexed experts and were previously found in places like the Namib Desert and the Australian outback. The AI system analyzed satellite images and identified fairy circles in 263 dryland locations across 15 countries. However, there is still debate about the cause of these circles, with some theories involving termites or self-organizing plants. Further research is needed to understand these phenomena. - Artificial Intelligence topics! #ai #artificialintelligence #intelligenzaartificiale

Are we as special as we think we are? AI is again making us think about what is unique to human intelligence. This week researchers published work showing that elephants call each other by unique names 🐘🐘 Machine learning analysis of African Elephant sounds showed they they address each other with unique sounds. Dolphins and Parrots use specific “call sounds” too, but these are just imitations of the sounds made by the named individual. For the Elephants, the sounds were like human names in that they were not imitations, but abstract labels. This is the first evidence of non-humans using names in this way. We’ve studied elephants for centuries but it took machine learning to begin to decode their language. #mckinseydigital #quantumblack https://lnkd.in/e4i6y7bT

In Western thought, the natural world is frequently understood as an object amenable to division and classification. In doing so, it is made useful and legible to those that might profit. The 2024 iteration of Intelligent Terrain is an effort to be curious about this work of drawing lines that demarcate ownership, resources, personhood, sentience, and what deserves the title “intelligent.” Artificial intelligence represents a leap in our ability to sort, categorize, and choose from the world around us. AI prioritizes division and abstraction rather than embodiment and wholeness by design. This accelerating ability to measure, quantify, and objectify set the backdrop for “nature” to continue serving as a resource to draw from, as a thing to be owned, or as a pristine ideal to which we might escape. Join us in a group workshop, followed by presentations of research and prototypes by a multi-disciplinary group at this event: https://lnkd.in/d8JjK4Hr

A really neat application of AI... #aiapplications #ainews #aicommunity 🐳 "At the core of Whale-SETI is advanced technology. Researchers use sophisticated hydrophones and AI algorithms to record and analyze whale sounds. The AI, trained on vast datasets of whale calls and human languages, seeks patterns and structures that could indicate language-like characteristics. This method not only helps in deciphering the complexity of whale communication but also enhances our understanding of language development in intelligent species." https://lnkd.in/ejUFfRqr
