Lived Experienced Specialist | Neurodivergent Project Manager/Research Officer UNSW Diversified Project | Passionate Advocate and Consultant Championing Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Neuro-Inclusive Practices.
🌟 Volunteering my time to inspire the next generation of UNSW scientists means everything to me 🌟 🌿 Today, I had the privilege of presenting to a group of innovative Honours/PhD researchers from the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences (BEES) as part of their Professional Skills Activities series! 🌿 We explored important topics around neurodiversity awareness and wellbeing, with a focus on fostering psychosocial safety within both academic and professional settings. It was inspiring to see these brilliant students share their career goals and dreams, and together, we discussed strategies for advocacy, self-care, and achieving their ambitions. 🧠 🌈 The session emphasised that asking for help and supporting each other’s journey is not only okay but vital for long-term growth and success. Fueling their passion for learning, research, and making meaningful contributions to the field was at the core of our discussions. I learnt so much from these students and was deeply inspired by their dedication and intellect. 🌟 I absolutely love helping students and people in general navigate life better. Inspiring and raising awareness about EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) related matters is my passion. But it goes beyond that—it’s about accessibility and embracing the different learning, thinking, communicating, and navigating styles that neurodivergent individuals bring to the table. These Honours students are shining examples of how diverse perspectives and approaches can drive innovation and change. 🙏 The future of research is bright, with these curious, intelligent, and driven students leading the way. Their questions, insights, and genuine passion for their work remind me how crucial it is to support and guide emerging talent. For those looking to hire within the BEES community, keep an eye on these passionate and highly capable individuals—they are the trailblazers of tomorrow. 🌍✨ A massive thank you to the Honours/PhD students: Phoebe Peng, Fletcher Arrastia, Zoe Ball, Ananya Anand, Benjamin Timbery, Julio Henrique Garcia Da Silva, Kaija Pedler, and Isabel Anderson for making the session so fun and interesting. #BEESHonours #NeurodiversityAwareness #PsychosocialSafety #FutureResearchers #MentalHealth #Wellbeing #ProfessionalSkills #Accessibility #EDI #UNSW

We’re proud to be supporting Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2024! 🌟 Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. Together let’s change the narrative to understand, accept, and celebrate neurodiversity! 🌍 ❓Did you know – 💡Every neurodivergent individual has a unique pattern of strengths and challenges. 👫No two people are the same and so we will all have different profiles. 🧠It is estimated that around 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent, meaning that their brains function, learn and process information differently. GET embraces diversity and delivers a person-centred approach to all of our apprentices. 🌈🤝 #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek #NeurodiversityWeek #NCW

During National Science Week, it makes me think about the aspirations of our children. It's "dress up as your future job" day at school on Friday. My son is torn between being a footballer and a Computer Engineer. Computing is his back up plan if becoming a footballer doesn't work out 😂🖥 My daughter's heart is set on being a Vet: she's wanted to be a vet since she was 4, after discovering she couldn't be a fairy 🧚♀️😂 Celebrating this week isn't just about recognising the achievements in science and engineering. It's about fueling the ambition of our kids. We are the cheerleaders for their dreams, the pick-me-up for each time they stumble. Whether it's a missed goal or a coding project that doesn't quite work, our role is to instill resilience. It's about teaching them the grit to get back up and the determination to press on. In nurturing our kids, we're developing a mindset that sees failure not as a defeat, but as a stepping stone. Every setback is a lesson, and every challenge faced is progress in disguise. It's our responsibility to make sure that their journey towards their goals is filled with curiosity, learning, and growth, not just in their chosen fields, but in the life skills of perseverance and hard work. This week, take a moment to spark a conversation with your children about their dreams. Encourage them to ask questions, to explore the world around them. And remember, whether they dream of scoring the winning goal or healing an injured animal, it's our support that will make all the difference. Every child that dreams of change, of innovation, and of caring for our world, deserves a chance to make it happen. 🌟💡🚀 #NationalScienceWeek #FutureInnovators #DreamBig

We're teaming up with MEN’S X MENTAL ® to bring meaningful on-campus experiences to create a community for male athletes. The reason? Male athletes often deal with intense pressure to perform while balancing academics, social expectations, and the physical toll of their sport. On top of that, societal norms can make it hard for them to open up about their struggles. We're here to change that by offering a space where they can connect, share, and get the support they need. With these campus meet-ups, male athletes can not only reduce stress and improve performance but build a genuine support system where they feel seen and heard. Our campus meet-ups will provide male athletes with: - A safe space to openly talk about their struggles and participate in unique workshops - Connect with other male athletes who understand/are navigating similar issues - Receive strategies from former athletes who’ve been through similar experiences Interested in bringing us to campus? Not (1) Black American (and the Afrikaan Woman does not count. They are with Afrika on the Kontient of Afrika, please make sure y'all spell it with a K to prevent confusion with Black American/Negroes we are not the same, nor share the same experiences) who is from American natively and since it inception. This is not a good look at all! The policies that created off the backs of the American Negro is given to everyone else and not us. This what one could conclude as another form of 'educational redlining' of the American Negro also known as Black Americans. These 'educational redlining,' is based on who get the awards and whow's genius get highlighted among the masses. The definition of 'educational redlining,' is as following: This report, analyzing fintech and banking products, uncovers cases where a prospective borrower may be hit with thousands of dollars in additional costs if he or she attended a community college, an Historically Black College [and more]... , (Account, 2020) One could strongly argue the case is the lack of resources/support when a Negro/Black American is not represented in numbers in 'physical presence' on WPI/Elite Campuses. Based on the questions I got from my previous post, I’ll throw more light on choosing rotations and a lab eventually. Think of lab rotations as academic speed dating, where the potential partners (PhD student and advisor) evaluate each other for ~4-8 weeks to see if they would commit themselves and their resources for a longer relationship for the next ~5 years. This decision demands a huge commitment from both parties and would thrive if they keep getting mutual value. Here are some thoughts I’ll share about lab rotations. 📌 Programs that offer rotations give you a choice advantage. You may not actually know what you prefer until you’ve experienced different scenarios. 📌 Don’t stack up 3 rotations at once. Give yourself room to change your mind as you learn more about your research and lab interests. 📌 Always bring your best foot forward, even if you don’t think you will join the lab, the professor could still be in your thesis committee or a collaborator or even a recommender. 📌 Never assume anything. Just as you’ll ask fundamental questions on a date, ask questions you deem important, even if you think they may sound unintelligent or obvious. Assumptions may cost you more than the short-lived feeling of discomfort. 📌 Observe keenly. Ask current lab members questions, observe lab culture, and pay attention to unspoken norms. 📌 Give yourself self a chance to experience different lab scenarios e.g different lab sizes, different research areas etc. 📌 The most common advice I’ve heard is that if you have to choose, choose a kind advisor over a top research interest. If the mentorship and the environment are great, you’ll most likely end up liking the research. 📌 Gather all information you can from people, but make your own choice. You know what you need best. Own it. 📌 You are expected to complete your PhD program in the lab you joined, but if for some reason, it’s just not working out, give yourself some grace, speak up and get help from the right people. A good PhD is a done PhD. Did I miss any advice or tips? Let me know in the comment section. Find this useful? Repost it to help 1 new person ♻️ #ChinasaUfondu #PhD #PhDStudent #Research #Academia #GraduateSchool #LabRotations
