Law students,
You'll hear about BigLaw in law school. I am 100% not against BigLaw. But we measure BigLaw by the number of attorneys and revenue. Adam Feldman, J.D., Ph.D., has some really good stats, for example, on the biggest private litigation departments in Los Angeles.
So, is BigLaw really that big? It depends. In terms of private law, yes. But in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles District Attorney employs over 1,000 Assistant District Attorneys, which is far larger than any of the BigLaw litigation departments.
I am not saying this means the LA DA's office is "better." That is not my point. Instead, what I want to show is where opportunity lies.
As a law student seeking an internship or a job, your primary goal should be to acquire the skills necessary to excel in the legal profession. Law firms provide a supportive environment for this, but it's crucial to focus on developing your skill set independently. This pursuit of independence is a key characteristic of a successful legal professional.
The legal field is teeming with opportunities, many of which are not immediately apparent. I call these opportunities the "hidden" job market. By broadening your horizons and exploring beyond the obvious, you can uncover these hidden avenues and pave your own unique path in the law.
