The Federal Government is investing more than $5.4 million in four disaster resilience projects, including drone research to enhance bushfire risk reduction. Between January and February 2024, major wildfires spread through Chile, destroying more than 14,000 buildings and causing estimated losses of £4 billion. Some fires continue rage, and from the start, MIS has helped clients monitor what has happened. Using a combination of EO and SAR imagery, MIS have plotted and tracked the changing footprint of the 48 wildfires that broke out. As this catastrophe begins to settle, MIS Consultancy is ready to support clients in the recovery phase. Rapid Blue Tarp Detection from Satellite Imagery Enables Faster Disaster Response - From IQSpatial After a major storm, rapidly assessing damage is critical for emergency managers to identify needs and for insurance companies to respond to claims. I'm excited to announce our new automated feature extraction tool that quickly detects, counts, and maps blue tarps from satellite imagery. Within hours of new overhead imagery, our tool scans and pinpoints blue tarped rooftops, a common temporary repair after disasters. This rapidly provides emergency managers with damage insights to prioritize response and insurance providers with visibility into potential claim locations. By automatically extracting these visual cues from high-resolution satellite photos, our tool delivers near real-time damage detection without slow, manual assessment. The computer vision techniques identify tarped roofs across entire cities or regions impacted by hurricanes or tornadoes. For emergency managers, our tool enables better-informed decision making by quickly highlighting neighborhoods requiring priority response. For insurance providers, it allows proactively deploying claim adjusters and allocating resources based on identified damage areas. With storm season underway, rapidly obtaining disaster insights is crucial. Our feature extraction capability delivers on-demand blue tarp identification to aid critical post-storm efforts in both the public and private sectors. Elevating Flood Risk Modeling: In the realm of natural disaster risk modeling, precision is paramount. Governments worldwide grapple with the challenge of accurately predicting riverine floods, and traditional models often fall short due to time constraints and data limitations. Enter Gonzalo L. Pita—a visionary in disaster risk modeling and associate research scientist and director of the MSE in Systems Engineering program in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering (CaSE) at Johns Hopkins University. His recent breakthrough study, published in The International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, unveils a reliable and cost-effective method for predicting damage from riverine floods. Beyond theoretical implications, Pita envisions real-world impact. This visual takes data from Fathom’s UK Flood Map and overlays it with our global economic exposure database produced in partnership with Risklayer GmbH.
