Excited to share our latest publication in Scientific Reports from the Springer Nature Group: "Integrating Core Physics and Machine Learning for Improved Parameter Prediction in Boiling Water Reactor Operations." Thanks to the collaboration between Purdue University School of Nuclear Engineering and Blue Wave AI Labs that makes this work possible. Drs. Saurabh Kabra and Klaus-Dieter Liss met again at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, here in front of the lab mural (https://lnkd.in/gsDJcZTu). Kabra and Liss worked together from 2008 to 2012 at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, ANSTO and published many papers together. Their interpretation of neutron scattering from zirconium alloys at very high temperatures led to a method allowing the investigation of defect kinetics in the material, such as dislocation annihilation upon heating, as well as the nucleation and growth of a second phase upon cooling (https://lnkd.in/gHq_D9_K). This was achieved by employing the dynamical theory of diffraction, leading to lattice strain sensitivity of 1E-6. The two collaborators went separate career paths through various countries and coincidentally both started positions at or around ORNL based on their expertise. This experiment is currently running at GSI/FAIR: 🔹🟣Laser spectroscopy of californium, fermium, nobelium and lawrencium isotopes around N=152🟣🔹 🔹Ion: 52-Cr (chromium) 🟣Energy: 4.3 MeV/u 🔹Intensity: 0.6 pµA 🟣Pulse: 5 Hz Isotopes that are produced in fusion reactions with the UNILAC beam at the SHIP separator are investigated by #laser #spectroscopy. Atomic transitions are investigated in a gas cell to ensure a high efficiency, which is essential due to the low production rates. These studies, which can at the moment only be conducted at GSI, are of special importance as they shed light on the impact of relativistic effects on the atomic structure and enable the extraction of nuclear properties. Congratulations to Drs. Michael Shribak and Rudolf Oldenbourg of the Marine Biological Laboratory on their new article appearing in PNAS! Together with their co-authors, they apply a centrifuge polarizing microscope and orientation-independent differential interference contrast (OI-DIC) towards better understanding the mechanism of nuclear positioning in live cells. PAPER ALERT We employed various techniques to characterise Plocamiomonas psychophila, the first taxonomically recognised pelagophyte from cold water. This species was isolated from a sea ice melt pool sample collected in Baffin Bay, Canada. Notably stenothermal and euryhaline, it exhibited several unique features that did not align with any characteristics previously used to circumscribe orders within the Pelagophyceae. Consequently, we have proposed a novel order and family to reflect the distinct morphological attributes of Plocamiomonas. Our phylogenetic analyses, based on nuclear SSU rDNA supported this taxonomic revision. For more information on this work see https://lnkd.in/dN-g_wH8

👉 CoE NOMATEN continues to implement scientific workshops in the field of advanced materials! 👉 This time, together with Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation, we will implement a workshop and meeting on research of materials used in the energy industry and aerospace sector at which we will discuss joint research, technological and infrastructural opportunities in this area. 👉 One of the goals of the meeting will also be to discuss joint R&D activities and projects for the development of the energy sector in Poland. CoE NOMATEN and NCBJ will present their research infrastructure, which will be used in cooperation between our Institutes. Participation in the workshop will be an excellent opportunity to gain new knowledge and experience in R&D works carried out in the energy and aerospace sectors, as well as to identify attractive research directions and technological solutions in research on materials used in extremely harsh working conditions in the aerospace and nuclear power sectors.
